anyone got a 928 porsche
#1
and what are they like?
i used to have a 911 and am currently running a scoob. starting to have a hankering for another porsche and i must admit the 928 is starting to grow on me.
i know it's not as involving as a 911 (or a scoob for that matter) to drive but 320 hp+ means surely it must be a lot of fun
any tips?
or px for a scoob?

i've driven a 928 s2 manual, and an s4 auto.
They do handle really well, loads of grip and very good steering, lots of feel and good weighting. The S4 had an LSD and was pretty easy going on the limit, progressive break away and controllable at sane speeds. Neither felt like they were a near two tonne car though, they certainly dont feel like a 20+ yrear old design either.
Brilliant cruisers as well, the auto more so. I would go for a manual though(and its a dogleg which i prefer to a conventional 'H' pattern), its pretty hard to make a quick pullaway with the auto if its damp and the manual lets you drive them harder. The auto is only 4 speed as well (merc box). The manual is a lot rarer though.
Only downside is that out of all the Porsches i have driven (a fair few, new and classic) the only ones to let me down were both 928's If they go wrong it can be very expensive to fix and there is a lot to go wrong....
Dont be fooled into thinking that they are a 2+2 theres no more room in the back for passengers than in a 911, although theres a fair bit of boot space with the seats down.
The on board computer in later models is quite good, although sensors can fail, meaning you get constant tyre pressure warnings etc which is annoying.
They make a fantastic noise too, best of all european v8s apart from perhaps the old Aston or Ferrari units. Quite a smooth refined noise, not as deep as the aston bellow or as high/whiny as the Ferrari howl.
YOu should get an S4 Sport Manual with sensible miles and good condition for bout £12k, a last of line GTS (i really want one of these!) would be about £15-20k still.
Errr, cant think of anything else now and its time to go home and out for the weekend.......
Cheers,
Nath.

A car dealer mate had a white 928 S4, what a beast, he let me have a go when I was about 19, completely blew me away and still commands respect these days, in fact there is a white 928 S4 still near the end of my road and he seems to enjoy the performance....
Go and watch the old 80's file Weird Science, the bit at the mall where the two kids have a 928 (and Kelly Le Brock !!!!) and smoke it off, certainly made an impression on me all those years ago.
Have drive a 944 S2 and that was more freindly but a LOT slower, 911 Turbo was an animal (1990 model with chip) but I couldnt let it have it as it was wet

Only Porker model of the last 30+ years I've not driven, but what has been said above covers it AFAIK.
Weid Science, eh; it was more than the 928 that made an impression on me... (but I was deeply impressed by the way it breaks away again in 2nd).

the *only* thing bad about the 928 is depreciation and servicing/maintenance costs....
They really do cost a fortune !
Buy in the knowledge of that and you will be alright.........
I too was lucky enough to take a brand new 928GTS around a circuit for my 21st some decade ago and was extremely impressed.....

Used to be my all-time fave car (now Caterham 7, just). My friend's big brother was extremely successful towards the end of the 80s, had all the cars of the time (RS500 Cos, M3 Evo, Delta HF Turbo then Integrale, Renault Alpine, etc) and the 928 was the one he kept coming back to. I think he changed cars every 4 mths, so if he stuck with that it can't be bad.
I didn't see Weird Science, but saw Risky Business, with a young Tom Cruise, and a 928 getting dropped into Lake Michigan. "Who's the submarine commander?"

To answer the original question, isn't there a chap named The Baron who posts on SN? I'm certain he's a 928 driver/owner. If that's any help...(prob'ly not).
