Career Change
Afternoon All
Sort of thinking of a career change and wondered what people think. Currently I work in Construction as an Estimator for a Construction Company. Only recently taken up the role as I was site based before for about 10 years.
Beginning to think its not a good thing now as the Industry is dead basically and I dont really think I am going anywhere career wise at the moment.
Below is a list of what i think i am good at and what i dont like, just interested to see what sort of job options people could come up with. Dont mind staying in the industry or changing industries. I am 32 now so still got a lot of working life left in front of me.
I am good at:
Did think about going into IT, Consultancy or even the Police in some way. See what comes up, so give me the ideas.
Cheers Guys

I am good at:
- Team Management
- Attention to detail, very good at research etc also
- Customer Communication
- I am approachable and a good listener
- Good at identifying where issues are with performance, finance etc
- Good record keeping , Site Diary, Emails etc
- Proactive approach to Building/working and trying to eliminate problems before they happen.
- Quick learner
- Photography
- Good at technical tasks
- Confrontation
- Office work , not used to the environment after being on site so long
- Probably not assertive enough sometimes

Makes me think "Internal Audit" - either quality, financial or some other compliance type role.

It was mentioned by our directors that they should think about getting some 'young blood' trained up so I raised my head above the parapet!
Might not get me a pay rise (well more than the 2% we have just been told about) but it is another string to my bow.
It is actually **** easy as well. All you do is make sure the company is complying with its own rules stated in their quality manual.

Why not do something that requires a degree of confrontation and forces you to be more assertive. In other words, work on your weaknesses rather than relying on your strengths.
Looks to me like you are good at doing things (technical work). I'd recommend a sales based role as technicians can hardly ever sell, but salesperson with good technical knowledge and skills will always hold a key advantage.

The more I think about this and the associated roles, the more I think the op will need to address the confrontation element. Liking confrontation isn't really normal, being able to deal with it and defuse situations is the key and fortunately, it's a skill that can be learned and practiced.
Maybe PMO type work - project office supporting the wider programme?
Gear Head - good luck

Not sure what the job title is but what about work in insurance assessment? You know the guy that travels around to damaged/destroyed buildings after fire or explosion and reports damage and estimates repair costs. Gets you out and about and uses your current construction skills with career progression? Work going in New York at the moment
Good luck anyway,
David
