Recommend me a good HMDI avi/mkv player
I've got loads of avi files, as well as mkv files that I would like to watch on a High Def TV via HDMI.
I was hoping to get something that could stream these files from a NAS drive to the TV, anyone any ideas?

I have both the AC Ryan HD mini and HD player 2 and the Patriot Media players. These are connected via a Synology 110j NAS enclosure which has 1Gb Network connection and a 4TB Hitachi drive.
If you need a good all round player that will also cope with playing HSBS 3D content then I would recommend the AC Ryan HD2 player as it has a GigaBit Network connection.
If you dont have the requirement to stream HD 3D content then either the AC Ryan HD mini or even the Patriot players (100 Mbit Network) will do. Between the 2 I find the Patriot has a faster menu than the AC. Both makes of players also support Firmware updates via USB memory stick.

If you already had an AppleTV 2 then I'd say just jailbreak it and whack XBMC on it. Alas the Apple TV 3 still isn't jailbroken, so don't go that route.
A couple of guys at work have ASUS O!Play devices and say they are very good and they've thrown pretty much all types of media at them and it's handled it with no issues.

One of the best and cheapest is the WDTVLive 'streaming media player'.
I've got a number of media players, including XBMC (which plays most things) - but I've been amazed at what the little WDTVLive will play and do (iPlayer, Netflix, SMB streaming, etc.) - and for about £65 it's a bargain.
Wifi ready, but I use mine with PowerPlugs as it makes the HD streaming much more reliable. It sits bolted to the VESA mount on the back of an LCD telly, the remote is good and still works well - and there's an iOS remote control for it as well.

I've had an AC Ryan Mini for a couple of years now. There's not been a format it wont play. I use it with Thumbgen as well, which is pretty easy to use to create movie sheets like these:
Only problem i've started to encounter with it is that it has a picture, but no audio, until i run it through MKVToolNix to Mux it without compression.

Thanks for all the great advice, this topic seemed to disappear after I started it. Now that I have found it again, I am really tempted by the WDTVLive. Looks small, has a remote and is made by a company that normally makes good stuff.
Still looking into other options to see which may be best.
