Default Bloody Plumbers

What does it take to get a plumber to actually come around and do some work?

Over the past three years we have had people come around to give us quotes to replace a boiler. Most didn't turn up at all, those who did turn up to do a quote never sent us a quote.

Over the past eighteen months we have added boiler replacement and some radiator changes to the list. Still no joy. We have managed to get two plumbers in since Christmas to have a look - neither have actually bothered to come back with a quote.

We are guessing £3-5ks worth of work.

No wonder Poles do well!

PS Anyone know a decent plumber near York?

Did a similar post a couple of months ago, same in central london

also, they always spend the first ten minutes slagging off the existing plumbing

and you know something's wrong when their hourly rate is more than your lawyers

If you were down my way, you would have your quote and the works would be done by now...

You will normally find that if the quotes are not coming in, the job is too hard LOL... Why don't you contact Worcester Bosch or look on their website for an 'Accredited Installer'... That way you sould find someone good at what they do and reliable...

Not restricted to plumbers though, when I moved into my area I had to start all over with tradespeople, took me AGES to get people to even come round and quote for some jobs.

I have noticed that people do tend to be a little bit more enthusiastic in the last few months.

from a personal pov- being in the trade- plenty of work out there and job to silly/bitty to be bothered with.

same as house re-wires- too much hassle- easier staying on new build or working on total voids

remember a new boiler should be about a grand, ok more for really good gear - don't get ripped off thinking a boiler swap maybe £5 k.

its only a bit of pipe and a gas test !

fitting new rads is easy- why not have a go yrself ?

Good point, or are you having the boiler moved? Mind you I had loads of work done to mine a couple of months ago, including running new pipes for most of the rads and having the boiler moved to upstairs. labour came in at around £1200

Oh and that also included installing a shower from scratch.

Hi Steven,

I had forgotten about that. Great idea.

Austin - it is a lot of work - and my estimate includes goods (150k btu boiler, double size custom hot water tank with complex installation, seven rads). I won't do it myself as I already work too much and want some time off. It is not the money, I just want someone to do it!!

150k boiler ( about 38kw ) you will have to look at a keston or two boilers ( 18kw) have you thought about a 300ltr megaflow instead of a custom hot water cylinder. 15oo boiler 1200 cylinder 350 fittings and the likes 7 rads and trvs 800 = 3850 plus labour 1500.

i recon your looking at about 5400 plus vat.

LOL, been down the merchants lately? For some reason the prices still haven't come down yet from the price hike last Summer! Cheap s*it won't last, so go for a reliable brand... This is the minimum I'd go for if you want a combi - Worcester Greenstar Junior 28i Combi Boiler

FPMSL at a bit of pipe and gas test! OK, that's the gas line done then! Shall we put the boiler on the wall, plumb it up and flush it out aswell?

Would be nice to just hand it all to the customer, take a cheque and walk off but lifes not that easy!
