Question

I've been turned down for a mobile phone and I wondered why.

Has anyone had any experiences of credit agencies to find out why?

Any recommended companies and what sort of costs are involved?

Thanks
Andy

Cool

I think they were worried about how you would tart it up mate

Look up Experian and Equifax on the net, they are the two largest credit reference agencies and for a small fee £1-2 they can provide you with your credit file which should show any possible horror stories.

Its a good idea to do this as you never know what may be on there. H (you'll work out who!) had a dodgy outstanding £15k loan on her file, alledgedly taken out when she was 12!!! Obviously this was not hers but had to be sorted out before she could get finance deals/store cards etc.

The info Disco has posted is absolutely correct.

I had a problem taking out a loan a few years ago and it was due to the fact that my mum had just taken out a mortgage and I was financially linked to her because of the address. I hadn't lived at home for over 3 years but you need to list your last 6 years worth of addresses for them to run the check properly.

It was dead easy to resolve. Just needed a letter from my mum saying that there was no financial attachment between us.

I would highly recommend anyone checking their history as it is amazing what some people can find on there!!

Cheers,

RiMo.

Strange thing is I've applied for a morgage and it's been excepted!

I've had mobiles since 1995 and have never been refused one!

A few credit cards all up to date and no loans outstanding!

I don't understand these things sometimes!

Thanks for the info

Your mortgage company may use a different reference agency to the phone people. Defo worth looking into mind Andy.

It's probably something really daft, it does only cost £1 to get a copy of your file, you can then write to them and get your details amended. I had a similar problem a few years ago as there was a guy with the same name, birthday and home town as me. I wrote to them and said he was nothing to do with me and I've never had a problem. Have you just moved house? There maybe bad history at your new address.

Andy,

When applying for your mortgage did you ring around a lot of companies?

If so, what you may find is that there has been a lot of activity on your credit history recently and this can affect you getting credit elsewhere!

What you need to check when phoning any financial bods is that they are only giving you an agreement in principle and not actually doing a full credit check. A good company will state this before going into any further discussions with you.

Mortgages are slightly different to other credit as well, as they are secured on a property, so they are classed as lower 'risk'.

I had some issues a few years ago and got the HPI/Equifax reports done . Sorted it out within a couple of months.

Andy,

I used to work for a credit card company - definately worth getting your file, also ask companies that you have credit through at the moment (loans, mortgage, credit card) which agencies they use.

Also be aware that your credit rating is partly a function of the number of times companies look at your credit rating, so if you try and get rejected by lots of places, this is reflected in your rating.

A mate of mine had this problem some years back with mobile phones. It transpired he wasn't on the electoral register.

This happened to me the other day - got my report from Equifax and I hadn't been updated on the electoral register - got a letter from my local registration officer and its been sorted.

My ex-wife was still on there too with about 1 million credit cards so its worth checking to make sure people you aren't connected to anymore are removed from your file.

Just out of curiosity was it Orange ?.....if so they are the hardest company to pass with .....they are absolute bar stewards

Worked in Dealers for ages and saw many "Credit Worthy" people fail.

Strange to hear orange are the hardest - I failed credit to even get a bank account recently but orange are happy for me to have 4 contract phones with roaming enabled!

I'm guessing it isn't orange as you said you wanted to be on Voda...

Anyway, Check Equifax/Experian, always reveal strange things IMHO.

I hope that these are correct...

http://www.experian.co.uk/consumer/c...e-howcopy.html

Both from AltaVista, and strange that they differ in price (being a legal thingy!)

Sorry Boomer!

It's £2 for both of 'em? I've just download the PDF application forms from both of them and I'm sending off tomorrow.

Should make for some interesting reading with the Rice Krispies one morning.

Chris,

U R right, same price (i _was_ sure that one was GBP2-50?)

Soon i'll be checking myself, seeing that a certain major domestic gas supplier has failed to collect their dues via direct debit (for two months). I don't want their incompetance to reflect on my credit status

Angry

I was also turnt down for a mobile, with a previously immaculate credit history. When I got my files from Equifax & Experian, I was associated with my ex, my parents & sister.

The big problem though.........I have a new house, not on the electoral roll yet & that was the problem, but only with Equifax.

After 8 months of writing to and fro, my files are in a state that i am happy with! Good luck!
