Is this irony?
I was out in my front garden, mowing the lawn with the "help" of my 3 year old son and his toy lawnmower when 2 kids (approx. 2 and 7) who'd been playing on the field opposite my house came over to watch (to be fair, it was the 2 year old who was interested in what we were doing). There was no sign of any other adult supervision, but I figured they were from one of the houses in my street and they were happy playing with my son, taking it in turns to "mow" the lawn.
I moved on to trimming the hedges, keeping an eye on the kids, when a woman finally shows up, some 20 minutes after the kids had wandered over. We exchange a few pleasantaries and she starts looking at my hedge and says "Is this a hawthorn?" to which I replied "I don't know what this is, but it's evil, it keeps spiking me so I'm trimming it right back". Her reply was priceless: "It's not very child friendly, is it? These aren't mine, they're foster kids so I have to be extra protective" and promptly took them home.
So, 20 minutes out of sight is OK, but standing near a spiky hedge with adult supervision is not...
Mind you, my hair and beard were looking pretty unkempt, I'm wearing a t-shirt with a skull on it and was weilding a 3 foot long hedge trimmer. I'd get my kids away from me too

She was probably just embarrased at being a useless feckwit and tried to cover her tracks by saying nasty things about your well trimmer bush
You should have said (in an eastern European accent "They're my children now ooo ha ha ha haaaaaa" and then dribbled some spittle down onto your chin... That would have taken her mind off the evil bush for a few seconds
