every single malt whisky will have its own taste, you will have to have a good idea of what kind of taste you want then, you will be able to narrow your choice from there,
There are so many regional types

It might be worth contacting these guys The Scotch Malt Whisky Society
They know all there is to know and will be able to point you in the right direction, if not provide you with what you're looking for

I guess that wakeboardar has made his purchase, but just for reference - i was in Derby today, and in the Westfield centre a shop called Red Zebra (RedZebraDrinks.com - beer . wine . spirits) that had some very nice looking (tens of years) old Whiskys, but sadly no '64's.
I personally find that Rackhams (now House of Frazer?) in Birmingham usually has an excellent choice of Whiskys.
If you are further North, Byrne's wine shop (D. Byrne & Co.) in Clitheroe usually has some nice spirits (and an awful lot of wine ).
Down South, Fuggin 'Rods (the famous Egyptian department store) has a good selection as a well.

You need to know which malt you're buying. Some are wonderful; some are almost undrinkable - depending on your taste. Which is why almost all popular whiskey is blended to give a consistent taste. But after a couple of glasses, who cares
For that kind of money, get a taste test first. For my money, I'd get Irish. Wonderful and distinctive flavour Triple dististlled apparently, whatever that means.
I first tasted it on a special occasion and on the rare occasions I get a sip, it evokes great memories.
Richard.
