Angry Job Interviews suck!

Was interviewed for a new job today. It looks a a great job, diverse and with fantastic long term prospects. It's five minutes from my house, so therefore zero commuting (currently 20K pa miles atm), circa 45K + comes with some nice perks and bonuses.

Anyway, sitting waiting for the interview (I turned up just over 10 minutes early) and was then kept waiting for over 45 mins!! The next interviewee then turned up (an internal guy) who promptly told me he thought he was only there to make up the numbers and that employee X was going to get the job (another internal) as he played golf with the chief exec (who was on the interview panel) and that his 'face fitted'!

So who steps out after my 45 min wait but internal guy X smiling his face off

****

Happens all the time, you just don't normally find out about it.

One of the pitfalls of being a permanoid.

The thing that gets me is that I know for a fact that I'm far more qualified, I guess they can stitch it up any old way however, with experience, blah, blah, poor interview (for me) blah blah, or whatever else suits them

maybe they have mr X in mind but if you are a better candidate they may take you on for a trial, and if you are no good or my X blows the cheif exec you may be released at the end of your probation.

Good luck.

Don't be too put off. In our place, we often interview for one position and offer another if we think the candidate is suitable. Sometimes the role is better but usually on a par. In fact we recently offered a guy 2 jobs and let him choose.

Try asking for a copy of your interview notes to see what they were thinking. You're entitled to a copy, though there may be a small charge.

Cripes, I hope no one ever ask for mine. I don't take any (that's why I always have an HR bird in with me )

Permanoid as in working in a permanent job and going for another permanent job elsewhere. As opposed to being a temporary contractor.

Contract roles rarely are filled internally and interviews for them are normally not decided beforehand. Much less bullsh*t and politics in contracting.

Seen a lot of this myself - frustrating but part of the fun of interviews... My bro recently lost out for the same reason...

However, I'm sure if you find a MD thats a vodka nut, you'll fit right in!

Seriously thou - good luck with the job hunting, Alex

Ah got ya. I wish I was a contractor some times, but I doubt there's much call for contractors in my line of work. Cheers

Absolutely you MUST ask for feedback if they don't offer you the job. You should do that after every interview as it may hel pidentify and weak points - we ALL have them!!

Good luck anyway.

And just think, if they don't offer you the job . . .

If you are interviewing always make notes and keep them safe together with reasons why you did not give them the job.

Remember you must be consistent with all interviewees and, whatever you do, don't record remarks you wouldn't wish to see produced at an industrial tribunal like "Corr, great t*its!!", or "Bluddy pooftah", or worse, because some people make a small living out of taking companies who don't give them jobs to court as they have learnt that it is cheaper for the company to give them a few grand in an ex gratia out of court settlement than defend a spurious claim of sexism, racism, sizeism or whatever.

First time I interviewed here I didn't know we had to hand everything over the HR. I wrote Minor BO on 1 form during the interview, relating to the applicants minimal experoence with Business Objects (a reporting tool). Contacted HR later to explain!

Equal Opa is a real pain when recruiting, you can't for example interview for a part time post and offer the same post full time, have to ask everyone the same questions whatever their background, you have to go out to advert just to make a temp position permanent (I went through that). As for promotion, doesn't exist!

edited to add - neither do £45k jobs!
