Default New holiday entitlements

Heard on the news this morning that Holiday entitlement is going up from 20 days to 24 days from today, and from April 2009 entitlement goes up to 28 days

Now in my company I see a major downside to this

I currently only get 20 days a year, and I can almost garauntee that if we ask for our additional 4 days holiday then our MD will tell us that Bank Holidays are no longer given as a freebie

This would therefore reduce our actual holiday entitlement from 24 to 16 (as there are 8 bank/public holidays a year) and also we will be forced to take 3 of our holiday entitlement days over the christmas shutdown

Leaving us with a measily 13 days holiday per year

Not quite all its cracked up to be this new Holiday entitlement is it

Another one who has failed to understand the new entitlement includes bank holidays, and that they are already receiving more holidays than the legally stipulated minimum...........

If the MD is a decent guy - have a word and see what the crack is.

my lads will get 4 days as they work bank holidays,

will be whacking the price list up again for january 2008 to cover it, i would expect most other places to do the same.

yay for holidays, boo for paying more for stuff

one of the punters this morning was complaining that his milk delivery has went up 8pence or something

Yup - agree with Reffro - If you get 20 days or more "paid holiday" in a year (ie days that you can chose yourself) then you satisfy the new 28 day limit.

ie 20 days + 8 public holidays = 28 days... = OK.

If you also get the 3 days between Christmas and New Year as additional 'shutdown' holidays, then in effect you now get 31 days - so 3 days more than the 28 days minimum, and 7 days more than the 24 day minimum today!

Most places make you take shutdowns as annual leave - so out of your holiday entitlement, even though you couldn't actually come into work.

22.5 here + Bank holidays - but then we work a 4.5 days week (although the actual hours are the equivalent of a 5 day week). Although mine goes up by one day a year for the next four years for length of service award.

Not failing to understand, as Bank Holidays have never been a statutory requirement to have off, and has always been down to employment T & C's

I know what our MD is like, we are lucky we get 20 days as it is

We dont get sick pay either, and we have to take christmas holidays out of our entitlement, and our holidays dont accrue either like a lot of companies do based on service

27 days + Bank Holidays, but this has accrued due to long service. I got 29 last year 'cos I got called in on a day off (AND got paid overtime, AND the money for the day, plus the two days in lieu)

When I was at the Police, I got 29 days plus the bank holidays, plus we could take 1 day every three weeks as flexi by staying a little later to build the time up. If I had stayed, after 10 years it went to 32 days, so a total of 53 potential days off.

Some Local government places allow a day every two weeks flexi, so I suppose 66 days, add in the standard annual local governement 2 weeks of more sick and you are never there.

Now I am contracting, I take what I want but the lure of the money keeps me from taking too many days, have got 13 weeks solid until Christmas, 2 weeks off and then start as a perm on 25 days leave (plus bank hols)

you get the rest of bank holiday days next year.

The idea is each employee will get 20 days + bank holidays opposed to 20 days incl bank holidays.

Never understood the whole have to use annual leave to cover a shut down, that's T&C's which you should have read before signing. For every person that moans they have to use holiday for it there's one that CANT have it off as it's a busy time etc.

The purpose of the legislation is to enshrine in law the fact that Bank Holidays are in fact to be treated as holidays in addition to your statutory entitlement of 20 days, as it was found that some bosses were taking BHs out of your statutory entitlement. Brings us in line with the rest of Europe.

Had fun at my boss's expense when I told him that all staff got an extra 4 days annual leave
