Question i know that there is going to be a good reason for this...

ive lost my booklet for my sat-nav and thought i might get a sensible answer on here.....
i have the Indago Snooper and remember being told that the internal battery lasts about 4 hours and that the lead that plugs into the cig lighter does not charge the battery........so why use the lead?

It must be the lead for the external power supply so in the event of a flat battery it will work off the cig lighter socket.

No way..............

It comes with: Cigarette lighter supply/charger & AC Adaptor/charger.

Are you sure the car charger is plugging in properly and that the fuse hasn't poped in the lighter socket?

The ciggie lighter plug does not work unless the car is switched on, at least it doesn't on mine.
Have you checked to see if the lighter itself is working, then you will know if the plug is ok

That maybe just because it's connected as opposed to actually supplying current.

Maybe as suggested it will just run the unit, not actually charge the battery. Using a 12v charger lead knackers the battery life much sooner than if you always charge it from the mains, so perhaps they have put this "override" in to stop people always charging it in the car, screwing the battery life and then complaining / asking for a warrenty claim???

maybe using the incar lead makes the battery run down slower....thus making it last longer?

If your battery is dead then it will not switch on straight away. Mine does this too. Try driving for a bit with it plugged in but switched off. Give it at least 10 mins then try switching it on.
