South Africa...... Yeah right!
Can anyone remeber that SA chap that warned us a while back how crime ridden and dangerous it had become over there....... and received a torrent of abuse because he didn't know what he was on about?
Sounds rather nice...........

When I was in Kenya a while ago a woman had her camera stolen, unfortunately for her she had the strap around her wrist, but rather than wait for her to un-strap it, the thief chose to lop off her arm with a Machete

...Not by much though
I know why there are so many south-african nurses working in our hospitals, and its not just for the money

I know a couple of South Africans.
One was a cop for about 15 years and ended up emigrating when he started having psychological problems after shooting so many people in township riots. He used to tell me horrendous storys about how his small squad of men would be dropped off and expected to quell/disperse a riot of say 5000+ people. Basically they had to just go in shooting and keep shooting until people got the message and started dispersing. And this happened pretty regularly. He also told me many stories about all the murders they had to clear up every day, from gang fights, robberies etc etc.
The other guy, well his dad owns a farm. His dad has had people try to carjack him 3 times in the last 5 years, each time he shot his way out of it as the carjackers were armed with machetes etc. Apparently in the area they live, the carjackers will quite happily murder all the car occupants just to steal the car - there's very little value placed on human life.
A colleague of mine was there on business for 6 months a few years ago, he got robbed at gunpoint and taken to a cashpoint where he was forced to draw out the maximum on each card, then they drove him to his rented house and forced him to open up so they could rob all the valuables. Amazingly they didn't kill him.
Though apparently some places are quite nice.

LOL has anyone commenting actually been there? Think you will be surprised what goes on in some what more 'developed' countries...
Ever been on holiday to the states for example?
Or Portugal is another good example of where tourists are successfully kept in the dark about the ghetto problems etc.
Look at the external view of London as an example - would you want to go there? Every day there are muggings car theft, burglary etc - just the other day a bus driver was attacked by a guy with a supposidly 'infected' hyperdermic needle - there is a measured threat of terrorist activity gun crime and no go areas etc. but yet approx 13 million people live there
Yes South African cities have more than its fair share of problems but so do a lot of big cities,
I am lucky enough to have visited the garden route - between cape town and port elizabeth we listened to the locals advice and were perfectly safe and had a great time
all imho of course

The original post was on the back of an extremely racist website and following posts basically said "what do you expect if you let blacks run a country". The poster was a young white South African who wanted out.
In my view he was conveniently forgetting the damage done to relations by many years of white dominance and refusal to offer much education to the black population.
I lived in J'Burg for 3 years a while back and yes it is a pretty rough place nowadays which is very sad as it is a stunning country, politics aside.
For the record I complained to the mods that the comments about blacks were racist but nothing was done. dl

Guy I work with has a house out there. Not sure where but he opens his curtains and looks out over the golf course.
He says its all fenced in etc but thats more for wildlife than wild humans.
Still wouldn't be my first choice.

Depends where it is. A lot of it is total rumours and scaremonegring from people who have never been.
I recently went to Cape Town for 2 weeks. Not even a sniff of trouble. Half my familyare from SA / Zim and there are areas that are bad, but I feel Cape Town is as safe as anywhere ive been!
Im afraid the downfall of somewher like this is having such a rapid U turn in employment. You have a lot of uneducated black's (and that isnt racist) doing jobs that they are not qualified for, simply because they have to be equally, or preferencially employed. If education was allowed to catch up first, it may be less of an issue. I could actually feel the country changing in my short visit!
Zimbabwe situation is disgusting, I just hope it doesnt hppen to SA as a whole...
