Seychelles - anyone been?
Other half is plotting a trip to the Seychelles in early April - anyone been there / is there much to do? We both love wildlife and I'm a serious diver so something that could combine the two would be great
thanks in advance

Yup, I've been. Very good for diving just about anywhere on the main island, even snokelling is great. Not much wildlife on the main island though, what are you looking for? Praslin has a world heritage forest with the rare black parrot, Bird island has, birds! Lots of terns everywhere (esp Bird island) & the Madagascan Robin is on the main island.

Where's best to stay (both island and specific accommodation recommedations?)
we'd like to see some of the interesting birds/ giant tortoises etc but not sure how easy it is to get around. would also like to be sited with access to the best dive sites or at least a decent dive centre that could get me to them.

2 weeks, not necessarily all in the same place - we're not fans of activity centres (implies children or lots of chavs on jet skis) but do like to be positioned to go off on trips etc (i.e. quiet and romantic is lovely but I'm gnawing my leg off after a couple of days lying on a beach)

Superb place.
Went in 1978 and again in 2004. Place had hardly changed and largely unspoilt with locals as charming and friendly as ever. For example our video camera packed up and hotel manager said - "hey just use mine for a week and drop it back before you fly home".
We went for 2 1/2 weeks staying at Mahe (Beavallon Bay hotel), then La Digue Island (La Digue Island Lodge) then to Praslin Island (Paradise Sun). Note AVOID Berjaya Praslin Lodge Hotel. We made the effort to do several trips to other islands etc which were fascinating. Plenty of diving opportunities but not my scene although we did one deep sea fishing trip.
You fall in love with the place in a day. Night flight is a bit of a pain and it is expensive all round especially if you like a drink in the evening.
Do make an effort to go to La Digue Island Lodge. Just simple "A" frames some yards from the beach and completely relaxing.
We went through Kuoni but I think there are specialist agents who would be better. PM me as you wish. dl

You can look at a 2 centre trip, Mahe & Praslin or La Digue. Bird Island is not suitable for bathing or diving. Mahe does not have mosquitos, every other island does have them. Giant tortoises are on Praslin. You can arrange day trips from your hotel to any of the islands. On Mahe, Sunset Beach hotel (27 rooms) is excellent, quiet, great beach & you can get a cabin right on the water's edge. You can hire a car from the hotel which will be needed to travel around. Great tarmac roads around the island, but terrible mud roads crossing the middle (you'll need a small 4x4 - huge fun!). You can travel around the main island & easily find a picture postcard beach that's completely deserted. Meals in general are average to poor, stay away from meat (esp beef) as most of it is imported from SA, in general Creole food is boring after the first few days. Fish is fantastic & very very fresh. Whatever they catch that day -you eat. I had the best octopus ever on Mahe. Waters are shark free as the Seychelles are on a 100 mile wide plateau in the ocean. On the other islands, it's generally harder to get around as there are rarely cars. You may be able to hire a moped though. The next place from the Sunset Beach hotel is Beau Vallon Bay & I believe there there is a diving centre there. Another big deserted beach in the south, but I forget it's name. I have loads of pics if you're interested.
