Tesco own brand is apparently the one to go for. Cheap, and won blind taste tests against a lot more expensive bottles.

I'm not a wine buff, so I just buy Veuve or Bolli assuming it's good.
I have been told in all seriousness that Tesco are doing a champers that is very highly rated by people in the know at about a tenner a throw.

Would agree with the comments on Veuve. Also, if you like Rose, there is a bottle called Jacquart Rose in Tesco thats about 20 quid thats lovely. Went to the champagne house in Reims when trying to get the champagne for my wedding and tasted it. Mmmmmm. Would say avoid Moet, except the Vintage Reserve stuff, thats OK.

Veuve goes for about £20 (or €28) a bottle here in France -- and that's the most expensive I've ever seen it -- so you guys are being seriously ripped off. Calais anyone? Come on down, the price is right!
Meanwhile, I think I'll take another bottle out of the fridge for breakfast

My fave chinese restaurant isnt that expensive but they have great champers selection. DP, Veuve, Perrier, Krug and Cristal (which is £180 a bottle).

I'd agree with the comments on the 96 and 98 vintage Veuve Cliquot, which is great value for money at £30/bottle with the 3 for 2 offer at Threshers, Wine Rack and related stores. The bottles I've had have been much better than the NV stuff which IMO tastes coarse and acidic.
Mumm is my favourite "cheap" champagne, and is about £18/bottle with the 3 for 2 offer. If you want to spend even less or use something as a base for cockails (champagne + creme de cassis makes a great cocktail), then their champagne-method sparkling wine from Napa Valley in California is also good.
DP, Krug, Cristal etc are all very nice, but they do taste much better when someone else is paying...
