Question Crime. Or is it?

If a crime is committed, is there always a victim? And if there isn't a victim, is it a crime? Discuss.

Unless you count the perpitrator as the victim for some crimes, then not every crime has a victim.....

Drink drive for one.

Drink drive sounds like a victimless crime, but it's a bit like attempted murder, isn't it?

Question

As I was pootling home the other night, on an almost empty dual carriageway doing 80 (past plod pointing a speed gun at me) I found myself thinking, just who am I hurting. Yes, I may be travelling faster than the speed limit and therefore commiting a crime, but who is the victim?
Started to think of what other crimes there were could be committed without a real (or perceived) victim. Must confess the drink driving post is a good one (I never thought about that- probably because it's something I would never ever do). So are motoring laws the only ones without victims?
Also, if there are no victims and nobody is hurt (bodily, psychologically or financially) why are there laws against it?

Purely a mental exercise you understand. I do not advocate law breaking.

I don't think it's just foolish. Foolishness implies to me something like wearing impossibly baggy trousers and occasionally squirting someone with a plastic flower. It doesn't mean knowingly getting into a ton and a half of self-propelled steel in a state whereby you are not in control and taking it out on the public highway. A person contemplating murder could send an explosive package to their intended victim that fails to detonate or that is intercepted en route. In either case there may be no victim; the drunk driver may get home without incident, as did my Dad all through his adult life.

You sound like you don't think that drunk driving is much of a crime Fatherpierre - is it something you do yourself?

How about if you download mp3's of an artist you don't know well, but like the music so much that you buy the CD - Is this a crime that benefits the 'victim'

On the contrary - it's something I often arrest people for and have their licences taken away.

Not unless the drunk intends to kill someone, Murder has to have 'malice aforethought' for it to be murder, otherwise it's manslaughter.

Yeah, very!

Foolish, reckless - a risk loads of people take. On a Friday and Saturday night it only takes an average of about 4 cars being pulled before one is found.

I had one on my last set of nights who blew 7 times over the limit and told me he's had about 17 pints if Stella and driven for 30 miles before we pulled him. It wasn't hard to spot him as he was driving with no lights at 2am and sparks were coming from one his wheels where the tyre was shredded!

He was also disqualified from driving for guess what? Drink driving.

Agree wholeheartedly with drink driving being a crime. I was thinking more of "speed" on the open road.
Surely if you crash whilst drunk, drink is the causal factor. If you crash whilst driving "a bit faster", the speed is mainly an aggravating factor and not the cause.

Can open. Worms everywhere.

I'm off to bed.

Lots of crimes have no victims.

Any crime to do with "possession" as in drugs, firearms or offensive weapons.

What about "going equipped" as in burglary kit or rape kit or large sharp thing stuffed down waistband of trousers.

A lot of crimes anticipate the act that results in a victim.

I agree and there are a whole batch of laws purely there so people dont take the ****.
Speeding is one, okay a lot of people may have cars and abilities that far outstrip the speedlimit, but it has to be there, otherwise there would be carnage day and night from people overstepping their abilities.
