Default how much fuel is really going in our tanks?

Hi
Was filling up earlyer today when i thought i would pull the nozzle out abit and see how much fuel was going in.
to my suprise it was just trickling in but the metre was still going as fast as it always does!

so the question is, how do we know that were getting our moneys worth of fuel?
as it did'nt seem like i did today

Did you not see the bit that says - 'allow room for expansion' or ' do not overfill'

I was at a a BP recently and I activated the nozzle and the numbers started spinning but I knew there was nothing coming out - by this time it had reached 81p. I actioned the nozzle again and the petrol starting coming out.

I complained when I went to pay and they knocked the 81p off but some people might not have realised that!

FB means that if you fill to full from empty at different garages you should get used to how much it costs. Any discrepancy will then be apparant, but not easy to prove.

There was some article about this a couple of years ago in Which? I think. They concluded that they fuel pumps were pretty good IIRC.

Lets just hope that they stay that way!

I must admit, i'm always suspicious about how quickly the pump gets to a couple of quid and it feels like you've only just shown the nozzle to the filler cap!

The pumps by me have Trading Standards stickers on when they've been tested and a phone number so you can check when the last test was.

Weights and Measures people can turn up at any time to check the pumps' delivery etc. Doesn't protect you if it goes wrong between checks though.

Those manhole, sorry, personhole covers on forecourts don't have the tank filling connectors underneath you know......they hide little drills that come up, make a small hole in the tank, siphon some fuel and then glue the hole back up. Thats why you're always surprised when you manage to get 13.5 gallons on a 13 gallon tank.

Doesnt stop sometimes it being £58 to fill and other times £62 to fill.... £4 difference but doesnt mean Ive been ripped off (well lets face it we're all ripped off when we visit the pumps anyhow)

Trading Standards are in on it; they run the whole scam. They're on an equal split with the Shell garage proprietors and they're making a fortune.....

The amount the pump pushes out does not include the fuel left in the hosing. If the hose is empty when you start using it then that has to fill up before anything comes out.

Pfft expansion

If my underwear doesn't need such a warning - then neither does a sodding petrol can

My experience was the complete opposite. Took a plastic can with me for the lawn mower fuel. Stuck the nozzle in and pressed the handle as softly as I could. The force of the petrol was so harsh it sprayed back out of the can onto my face. Lucky for me I was wearing sunglasses at the time or that could have been nasty.

AFAIK, petrol pumps are allowed quite a tollerance on the fuel delivery (10%??) because in the past flow meters were rather inaccurate. Now they are much more accurate, but some garages *may* take advantage of that and deliver the minimum fuel they can to pass a weights and measure inspection.

A bp station down the road from me actually gave you more fuel than it said it was giving you.....well 1 paticular pump on the forecourt.

I saved around £5 every time i filled up.

only lasted for about a month and then it was back to normal....
