Nice
Expat. British and Russian influences.
Combination or Italian and French design, cuisine and attitudes.
Superb rail system (to Cannes, Grasse, Monaco, Italian Riviera).
The bus system works too.

We have a place in Mayenne(the top of the Loire valley) 40mins north of Le Mans. Its very rural and still quite cheap as the Brits think France is Brittany or the South. Depends what you are looking for, holiday home or somewhere to live permanently. There are pros and cons for each region. I could regale you for hours about France but you could do with being a bit more specific about what you are looking for.

Nice is also a great place to get mugged so I'm told. Far better places than that in the South of France.

Cannes was a ****hole. Spent a month there in July/Aug 2002. Told not to drive round with top down in convertable due to ***** nicking gear from the car. Villa(with 24x7 Electronic monitored security got burgled) and they tried to nick my wifes bag whilst we were in the car stopped in traffic. Eating out was also expensive. We left 5 days early, guy says to me I'm sure things like that happen all the time where you live.

You may find this of interest. I keep nosing over properties to have a bolt hole ready in case things get really bad here. Interesting how over time the lowest priced property I have been prepared to consider keeps falling

Annecy is amazing, its about halfway between Geneva and all the main ski resorts. Very pretty town lots going on. It is surounded by mountains and has a massive lake with wakeboarding etc going on. Provance wise there is Gordes, Ils sur la sourge, Orange all around Avignon. Depends what you want there are so many great places there, could continue the list all day! Depends what you want out of it really

im off to nice next month again....
the french rev. is beautiful, and the mountain roads/scenery are breathtaking.
why are people so obsessed with crime and scumbags, take the place for what it is, and enjoy...
oh, and the wannabe film star birds walking about cannes are real eye candy ('part from the hairy pits)
if i get mugged when i'm over there, i will edit this post!!
xx

Agreed though about the film star wannabes, particularly the wannabe porno stars.

I mean, who in their right minds would want to live anywhere near this?

Cheers guys! Newlabour, to get to Grenoble and not go a bit further up is a bit of a bummer...get up to Annecy, and then carry on into Switzerland before turning around and heading back down again
Must admit I'm not a tremendous fan of the central and northern regions of France although Alsace in autumn is astounding, but anywhere from the middle on down where it goes from very warm to boiling hot is great! Having said that, the wines and cheeses from all over France are excellent!

I have a soft spot for Annecy. Not really justified, but I was driving from Bxl down to the Alps for a week's skiing, and decided to spend the night in Annecy - it was on the way and a mate had said it was a nice place. This was Saturday night, Easter Staturday, and I arrived at about 11.30pm. "Hello, does anyone have a hotel room?" Well, d'oh! At nearly midnight on Easter Saturday!
I sppoke to one doorman, who spoke to the receptionist, who spoke to his mate, who phoned his mate... who got me a room in a lovely little place round the corner for a good price
Result
(skiing holiday was disastrous, but I kept nice memories of the tourist town that still found space to accept li'l old me )

Nice is a city and like all cities, good and bad.
If you only want an apartment and have a decent amount of money then you could do a lot worse than getting somewhere that adjoins monaco, but is still in France.Best of all worlds.
