Anyone had a Hernia?
An Inguinal one, that is...
I had one when I was 10ish, but I really can't remember what it was like.
I went to the Doc today, and they said they'd refer me, but it'd be a few months Seems to me like quite a long time? Or is that about average for that kind of 'simple' operation?
Doesn't hurt as such. Just a bit annoying
I've got to lift all kinds of things every day as well, so I can't be hanging around that long
What's it like these days anyway? A keyhole job, or what?

Been there, 'bout 5 years ago.
You need to be ULTRA careful if you're lifting, and have one of these: if it gets to the stage where the muscle closes on part of your gut, you'll be in REAL problems! (Can't remember what the medical term is).
It might be worth asking your doc/specialist about the chances of getting it done quicker BECAUSE of your job.
When I had mine, I was in a position that I went to the doc and told him I couldn't do my job with it as it was, he signed me off, I rang the specialist's secretery, and I got moved up the list.
Not keyhole, relatively simple, a couple of weeks off, then about 6 on light work, no driving if it's right side, (brake leg) and you're away.

Hello
I had a hernia when I was 20 or so. Simple operation (under general), and a few weeks recovery. I was completely black and blue "down there" though.
Have a read: http://www.e-hernia.co.uk/

Franx,
I had a hernia op last Thursday (at 9.00pm as it happens!). Luckily I have private medical insurance so had it done within 2 weeks of discovering it.
It was done with keyhole surgery under general anesthtic and I was up and about within 24 hrs. Drove my Scoob on Tuesday, been shopping etc. since.
No lifting for 2 weeks and being cautious. I'm flaberghasted at how well I've recovered in such a short time, especially bearing in mind I'm the wrong side of 65.
I had no pain or discomfort with the Hernia but be very, very careful about lifting etc. because they can become very painful.
Read about them on the NHSdirect site.
Best of luck
DG

Think I might need to get it done soonish, as I can't really do much at work as it is. Just got to be too careful, and it's difficult.
I went there today, and she couldn't get hold of the specialist. I'll be back I think, and speed things up a bit.
No driving? Ooer That'll be a shock... Does it cover cycling as well? or am I on the train to work afterwards?
Might get the private health insurance, I think, if they can't do it before the few months they quoted this morning Can't be pissing about for that long
Nearly went windsurfing yesterday as it happens....then thought better of it. That'd be about the first thing it'd need to mess it up

I had one back in 2001.
It was annoying, but I blew it out of all proportion and spalshed it all over here cos I nearly died on an operating table a year before. It was nothing to worry about in the end though.
I was off work for two weeks, couldnt walk for the first four days and got better progressively thereafter.
I did it from raving too hard would you believe, so when I go out I wear a set of these
or something similar to keep everything where it should be when you're lifting.
You might want to consider asking for the "plug hole repair" which is two pieces of mesh, one sewn on the inside of the stomach wall and one on the outside. apparantly its a lot stronger than sewing up the muscle wall itself as the muscle tissue weaves its way through the mesh as it regrows making it stronger and less likely to rupture again.
Best of britsh though, I was ****ting it when I went in, but in all honesty the worst thing about it was not eating for 24 hours before the op.
Oh, and depending on where it is, there is a distinct lack of *******/scalpal interface. At least in my case there wasnt.
astraboy.

Big hernia, small hole = problem. Small hernia, big hole = no problem
Alcazar, the word your looking for is "strangulated".
Pity some of the old boys I've seen with their hernia in their ******* - a sack like a water melon and bless the old boys, they never want to bother us!

Intruth I was on pain killers for the first couple of days but then OK.
Frankx, I think your a bit late for private health insurance for your current problem. Bit like crashing an unisured car then trying to insure it to cover the cost of repairs.

I had my hernia repaired at the British Hernia centre -Op done under local.
They promote the mesh repair procedure.
Jumped off the table and went home by cab .
Back to work in 2 days.
Was painful though.

Yeah, the pain thing is true...........but not if you can lie flat. It's getting up/standing up straight that wrecks!
For the first day or so, my youngest stayed at home from school, and when I wanted to sit up in bed. or get out of bed, he came up to help me.

Not too sure how it happened incidently.... maybe that lathe I helped someone to lift at work, or one of countless outboard motors... Probably did it windsurfing. Anyway, it's happened now. I'll be careful for the month or so afterwards, and not work too hard .

I doubt it's age related, as I'm 23 More likely to be lifting summat at work....
I'm still going out there this time of year.... It's just so bloody cold, but the wind tends to be good. Not that I can go out at the moment anyway.
Anyone else still 'surfing through the winter?
I'll have to revert back to windsurfing photography for the moment I think Just got a new 5m sail as well
Or I'll make myself a speed board for when I'm back in the game...
No driving eh
@rse

Yeah its not age related, I had mine at 23 too.
I did ask the doctor what causes them and he just said that some blokes are predisposed to them and there is no "cause"
