Fitness after a hernia

Fitness after a hernia
I'm currently recovering from surgery to fix a strangulated hernia (lower left groin area) which was fixed with the mesh repair. I'm researching when I can start fitness training again but the advice out there online is contradictory at times so I thought I'd look for real world anecdotal advice.
Has anybody on here had the same procedure and managed to eventually get back to their previous training routine?
Can you still do sit ups / stomach crunches / etc?

Not trying to be to negative but, I have had three operations to repair hernia's that have re opened and still have the lumpy bits, the best advice I can give you is to avoid any lifting or heavy stuff for as long as possable, when a hernia is repaired the scar tissue is never as strong as the original , best stick to sensable non stress activity,
swimming, cycling and running are good exercises to keep your body in tone.without the grunting noises.

I had mine repaired 20 years ago ... and returned to exercise about 6 weeks later.
I had a 5 cm cut and it hurt a lot for 3-4 days which was medicated with strong pain fillers including suppositories.
I didn't do weights or anything similiar, but I did do Karate which included doing the splits, high kicking etc.. and it was fine.

I had a double hernia, and was told by my consultant to just get on with it. Seems the advice here is far better than offered by him. I did as he suggested and was told off by the nurse removing my staples. I also have problems again and may need it redoing
