How long do you get before you have to notify the DVLA that the car is off the road.

Had an argument with the future father-in-law on sunday about my old car - long story but...

the road tax ran out on it end of june and he only posted the SORN declaration this weekend - is he likely to get a fine?

You have two weeks from when the tax ran out to re-tax or SORN, otherwise its an £80 contribution to someone's income support.

I am confused about this too.... My car was writen of f by the insurance company and i declared it ofroad, but it said if you are not scrapping the car personally, do not declare it destroyed...

The insurance scrapped it, so is it up to them, or me to declare it destroyed?

There is an unofficial 14 days "gace" period after expiry of tax, during which time you must either re-tax the car or SORN it.

Having said that, it is an unofficial rule, and your fine could technically be processed the day after expiry of your current tax. These are the scare tactics that DVLA are trying to impose anyway.
