I've been here
http://www.mont-sainte-anne.com/Mont...pineSkiing.asp
and its bloody nice, although yes it does get a bit nippy. When we landed in Toronto it was about -25º
I would definitely recommend it though it was amazing.

I've been to:
Whistler - Great Resort - loads of variety.
Lake Louise - Good but cold you can also ski at Banff (worth 1 day) and Sunshine.
Brekenridge - Great area - you can ski Copper Mountain / Keystone / Arapahoe Basin and Vail isn't far away.
Lake Tahoe - Loads of resorts in the area, try a different one every day if you want to - probably need a car though. Long drive from San Fran but closer if you go to Reno.
I'd go to any of them again, but Whistler would be the first choice.
Cheers

I have been to Panorama in Canada BC, a man made resort, loads of runs, only one really decent bar though. Skiing/Snowboarding was great. It was freezing cold though -30 some evenings and occasionally that in the day. 2 weeks best skiing i have had though.

I've been to Alta, in Utah, as I was attending a conference in Salt Lake City. Good snow, and probably enough to challenge intermediate/advanced skiiers. If you're a nutter, you may find it a bit boring, but I loved it

Lake Louise in canada is possibly the most beautiful place I have ever been to, skiing is fantastic.
If anyone goes make sure you visit the old railway station restaurant, it is stunning.
Sunshine is well worth a visit but is very exposed so make sure you go when the weather is good.

Been to Whistler, Jan this year, fantastic resort, not the cheapest though. Didn't snow much, only 3 times in 2 weeks, but of the 3 times it snowed 18 inches in one night! Still, would go again and again and again and again!! Try "rim rock" resturant, pricey but the food is excellent.

Mammoth Mountain, Califorina. Title gives it away, huge mountain, wide open runs. Went last year April, they were just developing a "village" area which will make it a lot better.

I've skied or rather snowboarded the West coast for the last 7 years. This years trip started in L.A and ended up in Jackson Hole, too many miles for not enough snow. Squaw Valley, North Lake Tahoe is my personal favorite. Or for just a day or two blasting around I always have fun at June Mountain, next door to Mammoth.

Big topic this.
Lake Tahoe / Mammoth etc are a long drive from the airports - and snow was not a great quality when i went - maybe i was unlucky.
Colorado - Breckenridge/Copper/Vail/keystone - snow is the best - really dry powder - I have never had a better day skiing than a sunny day in the back bowls at vail after a dump of snow. Altitude can hurt a bit though as it is very high - you get wheezy walking up a few stairs !! Temps can be very cold - we had -40 deg a few times.
Whistler - lovely place - gets cold weather but also rain - snow is called Maritime snow - it is slightly wetter and not so good off piste. Big selection of runs though all connected in one place.
Overall though I prefer the more remote areas of Canada - Fernie gets amazing snow and is great place - middle of nowhere and some 4 hrs from Calgary and gets very cold - but it is so relaxed and skiing is awesome.
Banff I loved but skiing in Sunshine was a bit limited and Lake Louise a bit of a drive away.
Took the family to Tremblant last year and going again this time. Skiing is limited but snow is good and it was fantastic for the kids to learn.
Overall temps are low, and the resorts often are a drive away and different areas often arent connected.
The big bonus is cost is way lower than Europe, accomodation is to a far far higher level, the slopes are quieter and finally everybody is so much nicer. Oh yeah, ski school is far better than Europe I reckon. Dont worry about temps though - new kit is cheap out there and with that you wont suffer at all. If my 5 year olds can handle it so can u.

We went in a group so had a condominiums (sp?) which was just at the end of one run which everyone takes at 4pm when the lifts close.
Also hired a car and went to Denver for the day which was cool too.

Your having a laugh Nick! Alta is one of the hardcore off piste/powder places on earth!!
Jackson Hole is another great place to go, as are the resorts of Colorado.
I'd avoid the east coast.
but what do you want? powder? blue skies? no queues?

Another thumbs up for Whistler here. Spent a season there in '00/'01 and had the best few months of my life. It doesn't have to be expensive - depends on your tastes. Incredible scenery, friendly people, amazing terrain and tons of white stuff*.
* Err .. snow, in case you wondered!
