Off in December for a week.
Done a search and got all the places of interest but do any of you have a favourite hotel? Will happily pay for top quality.
Also should I wait and buy a 128mb smart card there, at the airport or before I go.
And what about clothes shops? Any good places to visit and designer bargains to be had or is it the beer and dumplings that are the only thing cheap??
Cheers for any tips.

You'll love it!
I stayed at the Residence Trinidad - just over bridge from the centre - 5 mins walk.
As for the smartcard, get it at the airport, there aren't many shops that sell them and when I did find them they had a very limited selection.......

Dougster,
if it's a quality gaff you are after, I can personally recommend the Marriott Renaissance Hotel. Nice rooms, good lobby bar for a swift one after a hard days trekking. It's next to the station, and walking distance from plenty to do (esp the touristy things like the big square, the bridge and the castle).

Hotel Josef
Absolutely superb, mdern and very contemporary hotel. Although it doesn't have a restaurant - just a big breakfast room.
Rooms are superb - expensive but well worth it. We're going back there soon.

Beer is only cheap outside the main areas. On the squares you are looking at £2.00 for a pint of Heinekin, outside, the local beers (just as nice) are 40/50/60p ish.
Food is cheap anywhere you go, a nice main meal is say £6 in the main areas, £4 outside (and I'm talking very nice food, steak e.t.c).
I managed to spend £300 in 4 days, but then I wasn't just drinking and eating

Heineken was sold at the English Bar on Old Town Square. I've heard good things about Goldfingers, but can personally vouch for Club Empire, also just off Wenceslas Square. Ask one of the many touts dressed in red jackets cos they are touting for that club.

booked my apartment through these guys, good service, got picked up from airport and dropped back for £12 each way, good prices. e.t.c. Depends if you want an apartment or a hotel though.

And to top it all, the George and Dragon has taken the place of a top little restaurant.

Dougster,
Electrical goods are far more expensive in Prague than over here. I paid £40 for a 128Mb last year and they were twice that price in Prague.

oh and forget Designer bargains. Home grown stuff is dirt cheap i.e. beer, food, etc.. Stuff that needs to be imported into the country are very expensive. I had a nose around the Nike shop and prices were much higher than the UK.
Proper designer shops were nearly as expensive as the ones in Rome
Some people think that Eastern Europe is some backwater and everything is half the cost of the rest of Europe. Prague has it's fair share of millionaires and has the shops to cater for them. Of course, ones with the money are all Russian Mafia, but that's bye-the-bye
Go for the culture m8, you'd be cheaper shopping in London.
Stefan
PS Almost forgot, it'll be pretty chilly in December; pack your thermal undies

OMFG! Why? Why on earth would you go all the way to Prague to drink in the George And Dragon???
There is a bar just a few minutes walk from the George and the Dragon called the sports bar (may not be called this but it has a massive projection screen you can see from the road). The barmaids in there are very nice.

"Cos after a heavy night this was the only place I could find which served a good old english fry up, it was about all I could manage to eat in the mornings. That and the fact I'm an English lout and wanted to look 'ard (joke). "
thats a big joke!!! The typical English hard man would last seconds in Prague if he got shirty with the locals. Prague can be one seriously hard place......

I think if you go to Prague and drink Heineken then you DESERVE to be charged stupid amounts (make them £10 a pint I say!). I'd rather drink my own **** (what the difference is I don't know, but my **** is free )
Was there last week, Staropramen, Krusovice and Bernard were no more than 50/60p a pint, even near the old town square - just go down a side street and avoid the tourist bars, easily done.
Go over the river towards the cathedral thingy to places like Jo's bar and it's cheap and loads of bars there.

Got prices for Josef today and looks as smart as everyone says.
Still trying to arrange decent flight times as I don't want to miss out on any KLM VIP hospitality lounge drinking time. (first flight quoted at 6.50am. Even thats a bit early for a Glaswegian!!!hic )
