Get the latest Time Out Guide to Venice.
last went 2 years ago, the art and architecture are superb, wonderful churches and cathedrals. reastaurants are not Italy's finest sadly so you need to choose judiciously.

LeeMac,
....firstly it is a fantastic place, my other half took me their for my 30th last year. Tips .... its expensive but go on a gondola and haggle to get the price down. Take one from one of the many side canals opposed to outside a major tourist attraction where I am sure you will get a better price.
If you arrive via coach from the airport (we went with Ryanair so flew to an airport an hour away).. take the water bus into the centre of Venice. We followed the coach driver along with many others who pointed us in the direction of a water taxi - much more expensive.
Just wonder around the side streets - just as interesting as the main tourist attractions

Good choice, wonderful city.
Also worth visiting Murano, Burano and the other small islands - you can do those on the river buses too. There's a TOP restaurant on the smallest island Torcello, Locanda Cipriani, allegedly Venice's finest. Although prices reflect that. Recommended.

Only been once, stayed in a Hotel on the Lido, very niiiiice, the street on the Lido also have a huge concentration of nice cars. Integrales, Impreza, 911s etc, no idea where they go to drive them properly though.
Gotta have Blini's in St Marks sqaure.
Don't do what I did, get very drunk, fall asleep on the complimentary chocolate they leave on your pillow and wake up thinking you've ... ahem ... soiled yourself!

Take a water taxi from the airport -assuming you are arriving at Marco Polo.
The Gondola trip was the best value I had there and is a must do.
You will not get into many religious monuments/building wearing shorts, I got caught out that way.
Take plenty money !!!!!!

Was there for a day a couple of months ago.
Fantastic place, but we didn't have time to sample resturants etc, so I've no advice on that.
Take a gondola trip - it's a "must do" when you're in Venice.
I think we paid about 75 Euros for a half hour trip for two. It's much less if you join up in a group of six.
Your g/f will need her shoulders covered if you want to visit the cathedral in St Marks Square.
Watch out for the pigeons!
Otherwise enjoy!

Are you flying into Marco Polo or Treviso?
If you're flying into Marco Polo, the view is amazing as you come in to land. You can almost see how Venice is sinking.
As for eating, look for little eateries in the back streets. There's a particuarly good pizzeria off of St Marks Square, but I can't remember its name!!! You can pay approx 4x for eating the equivalent in the square
Also, a little of the language goes a long way.
Have fun - its a beautiful city.

Take plenty of drinking water with you as the tall buildings/enclosed streets make it feel even hotter.....
Queing for the Basilica chapel or whatever it was... was a bit of a waste of time IMHO as you are so limited when you get inside it... ie. don't stand here, follow the marked line
Don't look up or you'll get pigeon poo right in your yak
Huge pick-pocket chance..
Very few public toilets and it costs quite a bit for a slash and don't **** in the river as the locals try to kill you
As mentioned above, take a river-boat into the centre
Go up the tower with the big bell thing... magic views
Shops are extortionate especially around the St Marks square area
Have a good time and don't fall into the stinky water whilst looking at the gorgeous ladies ... oh and er ...book more carefully next year
