EEK! Well we just had Code Red on our machines (evil worm virus effort) and that slowed everything right down so it may be worth checking for viruses (though code red runs only in memory so file checking won't help.) Does your pooter send lots more data than it receives when you're connected? (double click on the ikkle icon at the bottom which appears when you're online) that's what gave it away for me anyway. ange

how long is the cable between the modem and the wall socket? best to try and keep this as low as possible. it might be worth getting bt to check for noise on the line as well. i would n't get to excited about the speed thats reported, its negotiated (usually downwards) during the connection, so is not really a reliable guide.

I'm no web monkey, this is dads PC but it would seem to be running at 50,000bps, this is on Freeserve off peak. just at the mo it's an absolute bag of sh*t to connect but then not too bad when it's going.

Tiggs,
i might be your modem no being totally compatible with the one at the far end.
My home computer tends to connect at between 32Kbps and 38Kbps (36K at the moment), but it uses a software modem.
When i plug my work laptop into the same phone line, i get 42Kbps pretty much every time.
Yeh, i know that this is slow as well, but that's probably down to my Heath Robinson phone line extentions
Can _you_ try a different PC (or modem) in the same socket?
