New BBC News Website

What do you think?, I much prefered the old one, I liked to read the headlines all on one long page. Nothing catches my eye now, I don't want to have to drill down to find the news I am interested in.

Well being 800 wide could have been a benifit, so I am not completely against the change but a website is not a newspaper and the three column format is just cluttered

I agree - you now have to scan left & right as well as up & down.
The top stories (the ones you want to know first) are not
as easy to pick out.
Looks too busy.
Change for changes sake?
Guess they maybe felt other news sites were looking more
"complex"???
I much preferred scrolling down.

Using 800 wide is a big improvement - how many people have PCs running at 640 x 480 these days.
Agreed though - nothing much stands out like it used to. Too much scanning around the screen to find anything of interest.

It's poo - I couldn't find anything on it this morning.
Maybe we're just change-averse? Although when something's changed, you'd hope to be able to say "wow! much better!"

I was the project manager on the original site from inception to handover after about 6 months running.
I cannot begin to tell you how much wrangling went on before the layout was decided. I suspect that as this is the first layout change since 1999 then they started discussing it around about then and have just got it agreed.
Give it a few days to get used to it before you decide it's no good. I'm not totally convinced myself, mainly because I don't like the typeface, but I'm willing to be that a month down the line we won't even remember what the old one looked like.
As far as them getting more like CNN, the original objective was to beat CNN. We did that from the off, won the first ever multimedia BAFTAs (3 on the trot, I believe) and News OnLine is now the world leader in online news provision.
So I guess they're doing something right

No you are not the only one to like the new format, I don't have the little wheely thing on my mouse for scrolling down a page, so the new format suits me better, as all the headlines are in front of you when you open it up, no more scrolling to read them for me.

Was confused and not happy when I looked at it this morning over 'deskfast'. But it's growing on me. Formatting and fonts much cleaner - just takes some getting used to!
