X-Box or PS2 whats the best?????

Don't overlook the X-box.
They've just gone live with X-Box Live which enables you to play mulitplayer games over ADSL.
If you've already got ADSL + a modem, away you go !
OK, so GT3 isn't out for the X-box, but Sega GT2002 is, and while not so beautiful, the racing is better, with smarter opponent AI

I'd recommend the PS/2. Better quality games and more of them. I hardly ever turn on the X-box. The X-box is supposed to be a slightly better peice of hardware but the PS/2 still beats it with better software.

As far as I'm aware there isn't much, if any market for 'back up' copies for either machine yet and as before I suspect the machine would need a few minutes with a soldering iron and a local ned in order to play these 'back up' copies

As far as i know the chips for the PS2 are still quite expensive at around 50 quid fitted (thought they may have dropped in price a little). Not sure about prices for the x-box but i'd guess about the same.
Back-up copies are easily available for both, though there are far more for the PS2. There's a market in Edinburgh that did chipping/copies (Ingliston i think it's called) but they're temporarily closed because of some minor licencing issues at the moment My father in law can provide backup copies for both PS2 and x-box by mail, email me if you want any more info.

ok... so the console is supposed to be for the sprogs....
But... the deciding factor is, Gran Turismo isn't out on the X-box. Get the PS2 and a copy of Gran Turismo 3 and you'll know you made the right choice.

I agree with Marty. GT3 is still the game that swing it for me, but I'd also say the selection of games available is much bigger (especially if you count PS1 games) on the PS2 and there's more games suitable for your kids and a bigger budget range as well.
PC games don't work on the X-BOX and X-BOX games don't work on PC's by the way.

You'll need to register for X-box Live though first (http://www.xbox.com/uk/live)
Early days, but some games support it already (Unreal Tournament, a motorbike game etc)

Guys, Brilliant, thanks for the input,
I opted for a ps2 a week or so back- and yep Marty, GT3 is
SUPERB..., well chuffed wi the graphics.
As the machine is a verion 7, the only modchip for those who r interested is a magic2, 20 odd wires or summit to weld to board,
but as electronic repair tech, this shouldnt be a prob, infact, have a few mates also wantin theirs chipped so as to play back-ups imports, import and back up dvd, and also alows back-ups of dvd vcd, to standard vhs. not bad for 60 squid ish ehh?.
Thanks again guys ( secretly wishin i opted for x-box)
Edited to add, anyone know a local ned???,

1. Better graphics.
2. Better controller ergonomics.
3. No poxy memery cards just to save games.
Dont get me wrong. The Xbox is superior in terms of hardware. I just think it still has a way to go to catch up with Sony. The next gen consoles will make it a lot closer.

I own both, and at present the PS2 is still top of the pile for me with GT3 & Vice City.
What Si says about the controller is spot on, the standard Xbox controller is a far cry from the PS2 controller, which you have to remember is the same design as the first PS1 analogue item.
While the graphics capabilities of the Xbox are without question excellent, so far the games available do not do it justice, though I also realise this is changing as more and more titles are being released.
Vice City is clear example of the PS2's continued dominance, and Sony have grand plans for the PS2 in the coming 12 months, in addition to rumours regarding the next generation console.
I am hanging on to both consoles, as well as keeping a PC that is capable of playing games (I can't stand firts person shooting games on the consoles!)
Xbox live looks good, and I would welcome an online version of GT3 for the PS2
