Cool

Because they have their own government and constitution - they're based on a feudal system. This means they can set their own taxes, so they set them low for all sorts of reasons (most of them obvious). They also restrict residency so that not just anyone can set up home there.

Cool

You're only jealous. It's a nice place to live, actually - went there this summer. Bit too crowded for me, though.

Also, although part of Great Britain, the Channel Islands are not within the United Kingdom, and are therefore outside of the EU. Which means no VAT.

How can they be part of Great Britain but not part of the United Kingdom?

Yours in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland...

My point was that they can't be part of GB but not part of the UK as they are one and the same. They can be a colony or dependancy of the UK, thats different.

You have to admit, they have some fab byelaws along the lines of:

You may crush your father in law to death with a marrow only on the third sunday in each new lunar trimestre

Exclamation

Strictly in the interests of accuracy, the Channel Isles don't all have the same laws either. Jersey is a State, Guernsey is a Bailiwick (and Guernsey's dependancies are Alderney, Brechou, Great Sark, Herm, Jethou, Lihou and Little Sark), and Sark basically seems to make it up as they go along

I am a local person

We all pay the same tax, no matter what your earnings are.

Tax is 20% on our income, unless you earn under ~£12000, then you don't pay anything.

It is an expensive place to live, a 1bedroom flat could be anything from £98,000, and this could be without a parking space!

Take a look at one of our local estate agents, www.broadlandsjersey.com , for prices!

We do not pay VAT on our products, but shops in town (mostly electronics) will always charge the same amount, if not more than the UK - and these products could be an old model!!

If you want to know anything else, feel free to ask!
