Default Notification of an uninsured vehicle

I've just received a letter from the Motor Insurance Database. It says that as my vehicle is currently uninsured I am liable for a fine as I have not notified DVLA and had the car SORNed.

The car is actually taxed for another two months so presumably is not subject to SORN, and it is off road in my garage having some engine upgrades. Is anyone else aware that there is a legal requirement to notify of an uninsured car if it's on private land and taxed?

yes, I believe it is quite simple

if it is taxed it needs to be insured - whether on private land or not

SORNed - no tax/MOT or insurance required

slightly complicated story but I got a fine from the DVLA for no insurance (car was taxed but in my garage) - but simply paid it

This. Basically if the car is taxed then it's taken to be on the road and thus requires insurance.

The one thing you can get away without if your vehicle isn't actually used on public roads is a valid MOT.

MOT's don't seem to be "on the system" yet

I recently went to tax a car of mine, online - to start 1st Oct, the webpage said it failed and said it was not MOT'd

When I checked it had run out in June, and I must have done 3 odd k in it since then !!!!

I know she can drive other insured cars with her fully comp insurance but can my wife drive my car if she's not named on my insurance?

Good grief, I've got a bunch of cars but didn't know this. I have frequently allowed insurance to lapse on individual cars while they were taxed but grounded, but as they all live on private land I haven't been concerned by it. Amazing I haven't been thrown in jail by now!

If it is in the possession of a garage then surely it falls under there insurance as they are responsible for it?

Maybe.....many insurers now exclude driving other cars, esp high powered ones. Best to check.

Well, I suspect the automated process just looks up the MID database - the car shows as not insured and Bosch, letter goes out

In which case your scenario is void

But if the question is - if the car got stolen would you be able to claim on the garages insurance, probably

But I think that is a different question to the OP's

Depends what you mean by "in the possession of a garage". Ultimately as long as your name is on the V5 you're legal responsible for it.

I got one earlier in the year ...

I phoned them to go through the letter, s it says you have to contact them ...

They then claim its all down to the DVLA if and when they next run a

database search,

Annoyingly you can declare sorn at any time during your period of road

tax, but it dosent kick in until your current tax period has expired.

So i had one bike in bits as it blew up, and had to keep the ****** insured until my tax ran out only then did the sorn kick in, and it no longer required to have continious insurance cover

not if you cancel the road tax, its often cheeper to lose the road tax value than to keep it insured

Completely correct

Quite a few of the cheap and cheerful online policies often exclude this.

Also, assuming she does have it, the vehicle she's driving had to be insured elsewhere.
