Child Genius - Channel 4
Pushy parents or genuinely bright kids? Some seem a bit freaky and I would question their social skills and some of the parents are borderline arrogant..

I couldn't believe some of the reactions of some parents and one father in particular when his kid didn't do as well as expected in a maths test in a competition. The father showed utter dissatisfaction and criticism towards his young son, the poor boy was heartbroken that he failed to impress his father. These kids are put under huge pressure by the parents to do well in these intelligence competitions to the point that they no longer have a childhood. These kids may be clever now, but there’s a good possibility that they will be socially dysfunctional when they are older.

I looked at the 'hot housing' system when my kids were young. It's been going on for a long time.Very, very few go on to become successful & productive adults.
So it boils down to a bad childhood which results in a bad adulthood.
It's all about the parents ego.

I think if I had spoken to my parents in quite the condescending way some of those kids did in the first series, my Mum would have slapped my calves with a wooden spoon. Some of them are impressively bright at answering questions, but I'd love to see them get 100 plus different objects into a standard sized matchbox, like us cub scouts used to do. I actually thought it was pointless at the time, but in later life when my missus wants me to tidy up my car cr@p I can do it like a boss!!!!

These parents are only an exaggerated version of what we term 'good parents' though. I see it in my friends who are parents; their kid become an extension of their own ambition.

Exactly, I see this with my sister in law with her daughters and music, living her ambition through her children. She's become a little bit obsessive with her music, pushing her eldest daughter from a very young age to play the piano, violin, cello and now a flute. She enters her daughter in similar classical music contests and exams.

Competitive Parent Syndrome
It can probably be argued the my elder brother, who was on the gifted spectrum and went onto become one of the worlds best (and the top in th UK) in his chosen field Would have achieved even greater success had he been the victim of "helicopter" parenting
He is still a massive **** though, just slightly less than he would have been
