I'm in a similar situation, so I'll watch this thread with interest Search is working now, so you can do some (limited) searches to look previous threads. I found this one that might help.

Hi All,
I have an My01 WRX wagon and am looking at replacing the current Sh1te system that Subaru have chosen to provide. I don't want to start chopping holes in the doors so am looking for some ideas on what speakers, head unit etc, fit in to the standard holes.

Cost is not so much of an issue, and i am after a decent system but not the Ministry Of Sound on wheels.

Any Help Muchly Appreciated.
Cheers Peeps

Cool

I have changed the headunit and speakers in my STI7 and like you am not really after a top class system just something which will improve over the standard setup. I fitted this system myself after taking it out of my MY01, and found it all relatively straight forward. The only tricky bit is the postioning of the tweeters, which in my MY01 were in the footwells with the crossovers behind the dash, but so far have not put these in the new car due to time.

The front speakers fit nicely with the addition of an MDF spacer, while i had the door covers off i Dynamatted the front doors.

The head unit is very easy to replace with a single DIN, replacing the lower half with the oddment tray from a lesser model impreza.

The CD changer i have mounted under the rear parcel shelf, this means removing the rear seats to feed the lead through, but again this is very straight forward as they are only held in with 6 bolts.

I am very pleased with the finished system and the sound quality ia a vast improvement over the standard setup.

Head Unit - Alpine CDA 7876RB
CD Changer - Alpine CHA S624
Speakers - JL Audio 650CS (6.5" component speakers)
Dynamat

Rear speakers are easy. Any 130mm speaker will fit, with a 6mm MDF adaptor plate. Only thing is, you have to feed them inside the door and then clamp them against the "wrong side" of the hole. I fitted Pioneer magnesium cone thingies (abou £70ish)

Front I put in 165mm Kenwood Dual Mags (£140ish). Header unit - blaupunkt Los Angeles MP72 (MP3/CD etc), and IDC-09 in dash changer. The changer is a 5 disc slot type one, which occupies the second DIN slot. It has the added bonus that you can change 1 disk whilst listening to another.

Mine is still standard at the moment. After a bit of searching around, I reckon I will go with the following: headunit (single din); new front speakers; amp and sub in the boot. After hearing many systems, I'm not convinced of the benefit of front and rear speakers. Where most systems tend to fail is when you are moving at motorway speeds - the bass gets drowned out hence the reason for going with a sub as opposed to a set of rear speakers.

I'll be fitting mine this weekend.

I've decided that I cannot be bothered with fitting an amp and have gone for a hi power alpine unit (60w). Fronts i'm going to fit Infinity 605's and the rear i've yet to buy. I have a new set of Kenwood 2 way speakers, but there is nowhere to put the tweeter in the rear.

Should be a vast inprovement over the original...
Gareth.

Thanks Guy's all your info is duly noted.

I would liked to have had a sub in the boot but i don't think my dog would be too pleased having to fight it for space on a long journey!

I know who i would my money on winning, and its not the sub.

Question

Does anyone had any details about the standard head unit in the MY01? I seem to remember someone saying that it is a re-badged Kenwood unit? The first stage of the upgrade will probably be to fit new front speakers and install an amp, ready for the sub, so I wanted to know about the number of pre-outs on the unit etc

Any info appreciated.
Cheers

I don't think that there is any pre-outs on the standard unit. I'll check when I pull mine out.

According to the badge on the unit, the stereo is made by Kenwood. However, I can't see they'd sell something looking like that if it didn't have a nice car bolted to it.

My old head unit is sitting on my windowsill waiting for me to find it a new home . There is no sign whatsoever of any pre-outs. I don't know what all the pins in the subaru multi plug do, but I would bet against there being one in there.

Gareth - any luck with the back speakers yet?

I fitted a sony headunit in my old '01 WRX, and even without speakers being upgraded the difference was obvious.

I would just replace the Headunit first and take it from there.
