LIGHTWEIGHT crankshaft pulley and LIGHTWEIGHT FLYWHEEL. Good or Bad Idea ???
Hi. Guys, could you tell me please, if running Lightweight flywheel (6kgs) and Lightweight crankshaft pulley is good or bad idea? I've read some of people opinions and some saying it's worth it and some saying to not do it.
Any of you running both ?
Please answer only if you have experience on that.
My car is V2 Sti 96 Saloon, sports cat downpipe, decat centre section, Major_Sarcasm CHIP, K&N 57i IK, PFR7B's plugs.
Thank You

Theres another thread on this in technical, which im sure will answer your questions - have a look for that.
I believe theyre fine if you have one which is the same size, under driven pulleys have some negatives though.

+ More power to the wheels
+ Less strain on the pin driving the pulley
- cost
- Less boost on idle reving
- tends to "over rev" on gear shifts
Probably more to say, but I say go for it. Not my #1 priority though.

Im running both on myn and have noticed that the rev's pick up alot quicker, haven't noticed any disadvantage at all mate
That said i have heard some people say that 6.5kg's is as light as you should go as it can cause the engine to stall easier at junction's when pulling away ie need to use more rev's but i haven't noticed any difference on myn with a 6.5.

dont know where you got your info from, but mine has never over revved on gear shifts.and as for the less boost on idle revving, last time i tried i managed around 1.5bar and thought that was plenty enough.i have run both lightweight flywheel and lightweight pulleys for years now and never found any problems with either.

I have a 4.7kg Kaiten Chromoly flywheel and lightened pulleys too. There is an over rev on gear changes but that is sensitive to my right foot
I have posted many times regarding MY thoughts on the flywheel and I do think mine is too light. You will have NO issues though with light or lightened flywheels and pulleys.
There is of course a nice expense to buying and fitting them!
EDIT: I have no problems driving my car and nor does Olly at RCM but i laugh all the time at any other garage person who always stall it a few times before I explain and they sort their right foot out.
I think someone else posted that you can get more transmission noise with a light flywheel, I certainly have some more noise but that could be my now older gearbox moaning! lol. She has done over 100k miles now, bless her.

Cheers guys! Thats pretty much what I wanted to hear :-)
MaDass,
Could you tell me please, did you fit yours (flywheel and pulleys) at the same time or one by one? I'm wondering if I'll be able to feel the difference by adding crank pulley after lightweight flywheel been fitted? Or is it better to do both at one time? Cheers

My flywheel was fitted long before the pulleys. I could tell a big difference with the flywheel change, BUT I did not notice anything after the pulleys were changed, nothing.
Flywheel, major change, but pulleys just cost me money! LOL.
