Default Buy-eye misfire

Hi All,

Bit of a newbie to these forums, so firstly hello, and secondly if there's anyone who's got a few thoughts on the problem I've got with my 51 plate bug-eye WRX, then it'd be really appreciated!

The car misfires when applying the throttle quickly and when under load. With motorway and urban driving, when making slower changes there doesn't seem to be a problem, except occasionally pulling out of a junction. When driving a bit more 'enthusiastically' though, the car will miss once or twice. I bought the car privately at the end of last year. It's got 97k on the clock and is overdue a belt change. I replaced the first O2 sensor in Feb when it threw up the CEL and an error code. On an old service sheet that came with the car there is an advisory that the 'turbo up-pipe is leaking', but I've no idea whether this has been subsequently replaced.

I took it to the indy garage that normally look after it, but they said as the CEL light hasn't come on and there aren't any error codes, they don't really know where to start, although the guy did say he thought it might be a 'fuelling issue'.

I spoke to a Surrey based dealer who said that it could be a number of things that would cost £££, and that without any fault codes to go on it would cost £££ in labour trying to track down the problem

So if anybody has any ideas on what I could go about ruling out as problems, then as I say, it'd be appreciated.

Apologies for the long post, just wanted to make sure I included everything!

I'd also go with checking the plugs and coils........under load, the pressures in the cylinders increases to the spart finds it more difficult to "jump" across the gap hence the misfire at high boost / ignition advance.

Leaking up-pipe will reduce boost as less exhaust gasses are spinning the turbo.

I'd try spark plugs first. Sorted my car out once when it was misfiring. I have coil packs spare if you need them after that.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the thoughts.

I'll go with changing the plugs first, and then look at the coils and leads. Any particular recommendations for suppliers or makes?

4950Ken - Appreciate the offer, thanks. I've got family in Cheshire and could be up that way later in the month. If you don't mind I'll PM you if I haven't been able to sort the problem by then!

Thanks again.

Bluewrecks,

Why not give Stewart at TFS Racing a call or Dan of Surrey Subaru Specialist a call (Camberley)

If you worried about driving it etc why not join up on the Surrey Forum and ask someone for some help etc.

Sorry to resurrect this thread - after some delay (the result of life going a bit **** up and having to move home to Hampshire) I've finally got round to looking at the problem...

To recap, although I took the car to an independent garage a while ago when I lived in Surrey, the guy said he couldn't find any error codes, and wouldn't know where to start looking for the problem.

Despite still no CEL, I took it to a garage in Hampshire where a mate works. He said that he found an error code that he couldn't clear - P1112 Intake Air Temperature, sensor circuit intermittent low voltage.

He didn't want to replace the plugs until he could clear up the error code, and although he runs a 3 door Impreza (type-r, is it?) on which he does a lot of the stuff himself, this wasn't a problem he'd come across yet.

Could anybody tell me what this actually means, whether it would cause the car to misfire, and what I would need to replace to get it fixed. I guess it's something to do with governing the air/fuel mix, but any explanation in layman's terms would be really appreciated. The car is, as far as I know, standard!

Thanks guys!

Perhaps the MAF sensor or it's wiring, dodgy connection ? Think the intake temperature sensor may be built in to this, but stand to be corrected. Always worth trying a known good one though to rule it out.

Thanks Ken - think I'll have to bite the bullet and look at a replacement MAF.

Also I'd get that cambelt changed. I wouldn't want to see you fix your problem for it to go bang!
