Misfire with warning light - help

Misfire on MY94 WRX with warning light which looks like an exhaust/cat with heat coming from it and there is a clicking noise coming from the drivers side footwell, advised to change plugs but no better, I have been told it will be the oxygen/lambard sensor, anybody had this problem?
