hi
ive had similar probs with my 95 wrx

check the cam & crank sensors are clean & plugged in firmly

cam sensor is (as you stand infront of engine ) top right of engine behind top pullley area

crank sensor in in the middle of the engine below the pas pump in the block

only a 10mm bolt holds them in , remove them & clean any dirt or sludge off them as they a magnet sensor ( dont mix em up dont work swapped )

make sure plugs click in as they can get weak .

just turn you ignition on and off a couple of times, then try starting it...its just to prime you engine as the fuel pump is probobly now 11-121 years old and a starndard 1..so probobly struggling. would try an upgraded pump. or 'if' you have a dumpvalve it could be leaking!

my wrx does the same aspecially when hot! one solution i have found though is if i turn the ignition on wait a second and then crank it over it always fires into life on its first turn. you can actually jump the ignition or put simply you may be turning it to start before the ecu has had time to get itself and everything ready to run the engine?

Also worth cable tying the engine loom away from ht leads, 97 and 98 fairly bad for loom to ht interference

I vote dodgy battery, mine has been struggling with the cold, going to check over the holidays and either top up the cells or get a new one. £60 quoted for a top brand battery from Partco Autoparts.

The mrs's car also struggling due to cold weather. Diesels are a pig when the battery is failing!!!
