Question Newbie needs advice.

Hello,

This is my first post, and I hope I'm not being annoying with previously answered questions, but with the SEARCH disabled I'm struggling finding anything using the suggested Google search!

I test drove a 2003 52 plate (facelift) WRX 5dr yesterday at a trader's and I really liked it, but there are some issues (aren't there always!).

I'm struggling to finds the colour/price combination, and I really want a mica blue 5dr with the facelift. I really hope you can offer some guidance. This one is £10,000.

Whilst driving the car and the turbo appeared to kick in, it made a blowing noise that came and went in surges. My mate who's got a classic Impreza turbo thought it might be an overboost issue or turbo leak, and the trader says they will get it fixed (it still has a week or so of warranty), but if this is fixed, could it have caused any lasting damage?

Also, one of the front tyres is of a different brand to the other 3 - I would get it changed to the correct one - but can running a mixed set damage the transmission on a WRX like it used to do on older 4 wheel drive performance cars?

The car has 52,000 miles and all the services upto 40,000 were at Subaru dealers, but it has just had a major service at a non-franchise, non-specialist franchise with cambelt. Should I be worried?

The car drives really well (apart from the surging noise!).

Thanks for any help!

Michael.

No mate you havent had it put in the wrong section!
In all honesty mate you should get somewhere like the AA to do a check on the car before you buy it!!!
That way you can put your mind at rest about any problems with the car!!!
Funny noise coming from engine and not been serviced at the proper dealership would also ring alarm bells with me too!!
Seriously get it checked it may cost 100 bucks but if its a duffer and you buy it without the check you could be looking at a small fortune especially as its warranty is due to run out!!!
p.s do not trust the garage if they offer you a warranty they will only tell you in the end that it must have been your fault somehow if it goes **** up!!! They all always do!!!!

Cheers,

I'm just suprised, because when I've posted similar questions about other makes cars on other forums in the past people have been tripping over themselves to give me advice.

I guess I asked too many questions? I go on too much...

I should have asked:

1) Has anyone else experienced the surging noise of the turbo? Any idea what it is?

and

2) Can running a Subaru on mixed brands of tyres cause long term damage to the transmission?

I will get an AA check done, but I just like as much info as possible.

Thanks,

Michael.

Well when it comes to tyres i have always been told that you either have to have the 2 same age of tyres on the front and the back! So the front can be slightly older than the back or visa versa as long as the tyres are the same age on either side or exactly the same amount of ware on each side!!!! Hope that makes sense!!!??? lol!!!
So i would say that having a different brand on one side than the other is bad!!!! lol!!!(That was a long winded one lol!!!!)
Or get all 4 new tyres with the correct speed rating!!!

The problem is with the subaru being 4x4 that if you have one tyre on one side with less tred than the other side you run the risk of putting the diff under pressure and possibly on an older car breaking it!!!!
Hope this helps but when it comes to the turbo noise i draw a balnk soz!!!
