Default Is my MAF on the way out?

Just recently sometimes when I turn on the engine the CEL light comes on and stays on until the car heats up,then it goes out and stays out. Also the idle seems to be hunting a bit on occassion. Is this the MAF misreading or is it on the way out?

Had mine serviced this week, MY00 46k. Idling started to hunt a few weekes ago, nearly stalling on a few occasions but the car recovered itself. I mentioned it to the dealer when it went in for its service, dealer diagnosed faulty MAF. They said it was running rich, and replaced the MAF 2 days later. The idling now not irratic but engine note has changed while idling, it now has a lumpier exhaust note. Instead of "puh puh puh puh", its now "puh puh.....puh puh".

The dealer told me that the downpipe CAT maybe damaged due to the car running rich but turned out to be ok. All claimed ok on extended warranty.

Go get it checked.

You could always connect the black connectors beneath the steering column, and see what error code it gives you. I doubt very much it'll be for a knackered MAF though. You may have a faulty MAF as well as sometihng else...

The Lambda sensor will through a CEL and cause lumpy idle too. Best checking the CEL code first.

never got a CEL when my MAF went - symptoms diagnosed on SN. when went to dealer to have it checked, both MAF and lambda sensor had gone - all sorted 200 notes later...

i found that the car ran fine when cold but got lumpy when warmed up - esp on tickover.

MAF's dont generally give a CEL, where a Lambda will.

If its running rich, its more likely to be the o2 sensor.

Im confused now - thought it was unlike "The Judge" to be asking such a question there's a new "Judge"

Judge, IIRC did you by any change de-cat the car? I know you were sorting out the FMIC so decat seems logical, you could be getting the 'cat not working' CEL...
