stuck in traffic yesteday, when i noticed the temp guage go all the way up,I pulled over and let the thing cool after that i opened the expansion tank? (square box on the left front as you look in the bay)any way, limped home, after a couple of hours checked the coolant again and topped up, about 10:00pm last night took my daughters friends home within five minutes temp guage all the way up, and blowing cold air only, any help or ideas much appreciated. could it be the thermostat? if so where is it and how do i check it

either thermostat or head gasket..
to check for a blockage or thermostat problem feel the bottom radiator hose to see if its warm/hot after a run, If its cold then you have got a circulation problem not allowing the coolant to move through the radiator.

did'nt dare go for a drive, so I ran the car on the drive, top hose hot, bottom hose cold, electric fan kicked in, temp gauge shows normal, then steam from the overflow on the expansion tank circulation problem? still blowing cold air only, where is the thermostat located? can i take it out and run without it to check if hot air will blow through the in car heaters?

It could be a problem with your radiator/header tank cap.! because if this doesnt work correct water will over flow into the overflow next to the batery.
Dont know where the thermostat is sorry..! but you can test it by putting it in a pan of boiling water to see if it opens..

cheers dan!! for that, i've apoxyed that s**t bit of plastic back together, i noticed water by the battery but thought it was from when i filled the coolant level, i still suspect the thermostat as it still blows cold air (figure try this 1st b4 going for a rad replacment?)
