I have got a spare WRX engine and what to get some serious power out of it. Is it worth getting Group A cossie pistons and new con rods, etc ?

I want to run the engine on a Motec ECU with anti lag and water injection

Pistons, Rods, HeadWork, Cams, Gaskets, Posibly Oil Pump.

Injectors, Clutch, Gearbox, oh and lots of boost.

Hey phil, you just want your own back on that EVO guy, go on, admit it!

For a first attempt I would be tempted to just put the pistons in and leave the crank and rods alone. Otherwise budget 6-900 for billet rods, £150-200 for new bearings, £50 for plastigage, £400 for all the various gaskets and new studs etc, the list goes on.

All depends how much you want to spend, how far you want to go etc.

Nothing's going to happen without a serious turbo though, which adds to the cost.

About time for the FAQ, as these rebuild questions are always popping up.

How much is a decent set of pistons going to set me back ? Is it worth doing the con rods while the engine is stripped ?

I would seriously recommend against using standard rods in any moderately serious "power build". I have had a standard rod snap in one of my engines... took out the block and damaged the head.

If you are uprating the pistons and wish to run more boost, then uprate the rods too.

Cool

babber,

email me offline if you are serious about motec and uprating internals, I may be able to help.

Moray

PS: I am often in the yate/chipenham area as my g/f lives near badminton.

Ahh, do gooders!

Pistons are about the same as rods, best to go to cosworth direct if want their pistons. But R19KET does good pistons, for less, something like £750 including rings, but you'll have to ask him for exact pricing.

Rods are a good idea, if you are shooting for 400hp, it's probably more economic than a new block.

Speaking of such things, I am hearing cyro treatment is being used on rods, cranks, brake rotors etc, any places in the UK do it?

A good (non scooby) mate of mine has been reading up on NOS,and think that we can do it for less than £100. 100 BHP for less than £100 hello.

Apparently it was only be used at higher revs ?? When the turbo is running out of steam.

What about twin turbos, would that be any good ?

I've been toying with the idea of twin turbo's on a VF22 closed deck block...

But the people in the know about these sort of things keep saying "dont be so bloody stupid" lol.

I reckon they are scared of the unknown on a scooby......

Seriously though, it would be a bitch to do - flow problems, spool up issues, & thats all i can remember!

As it was put to me "why the bloody hell do the monster power skylines do a single big turbo conversion? - cos it's easier to control".

Still, I want to aim for slightly more than 400 bhp
