Default Worth going bigger power with high mileage?

2004 blobeye wrx td04 on 135k mikes.

Been standard it’s whole life minus dump valve that I’ve now removed for standard. Service history isn’t great and probably hasn’t been that well looked after.

however compression tested at 150-160psi across all 4. Sniff test shows no headgasket issues and generally runs and drives not to bad.

My plan was to go for a safe 280bhp with a remap after full decat and supporting mods(filter, sti uppipe, fuel pump, remap). Upon removal of downpipe I found the td04 has considerable in and out play so I’ve gone ahead and removed the turbo.

my question for you guys is do I just get another td04 and stick to original plan of 270-280bhp or now go ahead and get a sti turbo and injectors and up my goal to 320-330bhp? My concern is the car handling this power at the high 135k miles. My other side is saying go bigger turbo as I’ve gone through all the effort of removing turbo, uppipe and so on so would like to make the most of the situation.

i know some can go forever and never blow up yet others die after a few k miles, so I’ll never really get a certain answer but just after some opinions

many thanks

if your concerned about to much power then why not try a hybrid td04 to crack the 300bhp mark, a good wrx engine/gearbox should take that without issue and have incredible spool aswell

Cost wise I’m guessing same sort of price as a sti turbo?

i think a hybrid td04 would be around £550 mate, speak to some companies

turbo dynamics
aet turbos
turbo technics
central turbo (craig bellworthy i think you need to speak to)

but yes a vf35 can be bought for around £350-£400 and give 330-350bhp or even a vf28/30/34

I think I’d rather go for cheaper option of a vf35 as it’s extra money I didn’t have planned into the build. A td04 still cheapest option though, just bugs me all the effort it’s taken to get it all off for no real gain

But also depends on if the vf35 will be to much to handle for the mileage

thats a risk you have to take my friend. if i were you i would send off your td04 to be re-freshed and fettled with to give 300bhp.

you can also replace the compressor wheel + cover on the td04 (i know - i sound like a broken record on this subject, haha). If the rest of the turbo is in good nick (as in, the turbine wheel, mainly), you can do this upgrade for the cost of a bearing set for the td04 (about 40 for a reasonable quality one) and the compressor housing + wheel. I got myself a billet wheel + compressor cover upgrade from Kinugawa turbo on ebay for about 160 including delivery and import duty. I rebuilt my turbo 200 miles ago, however, so my bearings were fresh, but even at 200-something it's not a bad price.

I haven't ran mine yet with the compressor upgrade, but I don't anticipate any issues (apart from the mapping).

Some pics here in post 10 and 40 onwards https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...th-a-td04.html One niggle is that the CHRA has to be modified slightly as pictured there, however you could also get this

To avoid that, you could also get this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kinugawa-...e/122485045608 Make sure to ask them to also sell you their 19T subaru specific compressor cover with it. This CHRA should bolt directly to your current hot side of the turbo, afaik (again, anyone thinking of ordering this needs to verify this independently with the seller)

As a final alternative, you could rebuild the td04 to standard spec with new bearings for about 40 quid. There are lots of videos on youtube on how to do this.

Overall, I agree with the shreksta - if I had the options of vf35 of uknown origin, or a fully rebuilt hybrid td04, I'd probably take the td04 myself.

Mapping the Td04 you still looking at 25%+ more power. That will make a huge difference.

It's all the ancillaries that you have to worry about boosting the power at that mileage. Hoses, gaskets, clutch, brakes etc.
