All,

Im not that clued up on NOS for cars, but after watching The Fast and The Furious I am v.tempted

I have a 2.0L Sport and was thinking of adding a NOS kit, I dont want 'uge amounts of power, just a 25bhp - 50bhp increase will do. What would you lot advise? What is it going to cost me? Will my engine cope with the extra power? Will it survive or will excessive NOS fun kill it off evetually? Would my insurance company sting me?

Any advise on this topic is welcome

Feel free to divulge

Cheers

James

Hello mate

To be honest with you, NOS is one of those mods that you do "all out", or not at all. A couple of years ago I looked into fitting a kit on my old RS Turbo. To cut a long story short, to get any noticeable boost in power (especially in a scooby) you need be running 100bhp+, and then you are into the realms of expensive engine strengthening (The STI et al may come into their own here with their forged pistons etc. etc.). I never bothered in the end as a ride in a friends Astra, with approx. 50bhp NOS injection, proved to be unspectacular. Don't get me wrong; you could feel it, but unfortunately it wasn't Fast and Furious blurring streetlights and 130mph wheelspins (Those boys must have been running 500bhp+ NOS on Titanium, blueprinted engines; or could it have been camera trickery?)

Maybe I'm just hard to please, and I'm sure there are chaps on here that know much more about it than me.....There was a good site I used to know on it...I'll try and dig it out and post it...

Regards, Owen

What! No wheepspins @ 130mph

Cheers for advice Owen....

So would a 50 - 75 bhp boost be sufficent to get some kick and not destroy the engine @ the same time? Im not willing to go all out as it's only a Sport and I'd prefer to save my cash for a Turbo. I was just wondering how effictve it really was? Anybody want to lend me there NOS'd car?

This is one site that was recommended to me:

http://www.highpower.freeserve.co.uk/

They used to be the cheapest (that I cold find in the U.K.), and seem to have a fairly good reputation. Their prices are also listed....bea in mind that they are the kit only though: fitting another matter...

Without wanting to sound like a P#@$k, you would be much more likely to notice a 50bhp "boost" in a Sport, as opposed to a Turbo/WRX due to the relative difference in standard output.

All in all, its a relatively cheap way to go for "smaller" power increases (i.e >80bhp), but I'd say you are looking at the best part of a grand, including a good fitting job (some people fit their own, but I wouldnt suggest it if you are anything like the mechanical moron that I am!)

Also worth noting that 50bhp did not feel like a turbo "kick" as such; in fact it's quite a "smoothe" feeling (sorry for all these "'s, but it's quite dificult to describe accurately....)

Good Luck.....Owen

Red face

A grand

I was hoping more around £500

Do you know what insurance companies() think of NOS? As it is illegal to use on the road should it be an issue?
