Red face

Over the last couple of days I've had a little trouble starting up first time in the morning - not its usual "first time" start. Today a load of smoke came from the exhaust (fog!) as I backed out of the garage.
I've noticed a distict vibration of the car when its idling.
My local garage (non-Scooby) diagnosed misfiring after doing an emission test too.
He says it could be a dodgy spark plug, coil, leads or compression problem.
I have noticed a sluggishness too at times.
Anyone able to confirm these possibilities, and should I trust this to a non-Scooby trained mechanic (although he does know his stuff normally!)

The car is a '93 WRX.

Cheers guys,

Matthew

It's probably one of the coil packs, they sit on top of the spark plug.

Thumbs down

Jim,
Yeah, thanks for your (hopeful) answer.
I have been given a doom and gloom story that it could be that my induction kit has caused the mass air flow meter to fail. Equally, I have been told it might be an air pipework problem. This is especially as it is noticeable when it is idling.
Anyone had experience of this too?

Matthew

Doubt it Matthew. That problem is more common in MY99+ model cars with the later film sensor. Yours may be the hot-wire type. (I think?).

Anyway, if it had FAILED, you'd be going nowhere...Ask T5 NYW (Tony). His packed up after two introductory laps of Oulton Park. His car would start but not run.

Lets hope it's plug leads!

If it only running on three, its vital to get it sorted ASAP.

If the plug isn't firing, the fuel will be washing the bore and will lead to huge wear of the bore/rings on the offending cylinder.

You may also be diluting the oil with unburnt fuel.

Update time
None of the above - it appears that no.4 cylinder has (only small)scars on the bore, and needs further investigation, with a potential rebuild looming

Pete was nearer the mark, and no I didn't use it at all over the weekend

After only 60k miles I am disappointed to say the least. Have always used SUL 98/97 RON. With a rebuild, could/would it be possible to use ordinary UL, given correct spec to cylinders etc?

Cheers,
Matthew

Unhappy

Sorry to hear that Matthew...

Are you going to let Jerry and his crew do the work for you?
