Squealing/Rattling when in neutral.
Hello All,
I am driving a Subaru impreza 1.5R Sport Wagon 06 called Suki
She was left for a few months without use. Since she was started up there has been a squealing/rattling noise that sounds like metal ***** in a tin can being shaken.
This happens when she is in neutral and the clutch is not in use.
However, when I push the clutch in, there is a new squealing noise that happens on top of the original squealing noise. So I can hear 2 squealing noises when depressing the clutch pedal in neutral.
As soon as I chuck it into gear and she gets going, both noises vanish and it's smooth sailing.
It definitely sounds like it's emanating from behind the engine.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?
From my research it could be:
-Pilot bearing
-Throwout bearing
-Input shaft bearing
It doesn't sound like it could be the input shaft bearing based on the symptoms, but I'm no car Dr.

Had the same on my MY2000 classic. Sounds like the bearings in the clutch. There's two, one in flywheel and the release bearing. Replace them quickly before they damage anything else, especiall the flywhe one. Change the clutch and gearbox oil while you're doing it.
It's a big job but can be done diy. 2 of us did mine in a weekend on car ramps.
