Classic gearbox woes
Hi All
Been ages since I've been active, did my mods then had kids.
However old reliable has had a slight mishap. 1997 UK turbo 214k mile's original engine and box running TD04 hybrid 300 bhp/lbft
Oil seal on the box has gone and soaked the clutch. I have the box out (thanks to 911 and Grease monkey for instructions and warnings )
The drain plug had more metal paste and even small grains of metal on it than I would like, although there's no noise from the box.
BUT the input shaft to the box has play on it. That doesn't seem right and explains oil seal failure. Any experience on this anyone?
Also the release bearing (knackered) rattles on the housing, it looks like the shaft it rests on is worn. Perhaps this is less of an issue?
I'm thinking a second hand box is going to be my cheapest best bet, then open up mine?
While I'm at it going to throw in a light flywheel for a final hurrah. Any advice much appreciated. Lots of the old suppliers seem to have gone since I was involved a decade ago - been a bloody reliable car
Cheers

Can you see if there's any play on the input shaft. I think they should be totally solid.
I'm in Milton Keynes so delivery would definitely be needed. Have to say I've not had to ship anything this heavy so don't really have a clue where to start. Usually just speak to logistics at work ;-)

It does sound interesting, could do with the code. Just so I can check the diff but I think it's right. How many miles on it? Are you putting a 6sp in?
Cheers

Does that link work? Bloody Google photos are a pain
Just noticed it needs a vehicle speed sensor. So will let it go for 100
Had a replacement box and diff bought as had a while
Turned out rear diff had totally destroyed itself and the whine was the rear diff backlash.
This one is the spare we got and all worked fine
Think a pallet courier is about 70 or 80 from Aberdeen.
Will get more photos when I'm home before it's dark.cheers
