The easiest way I found for any system is having a dedicated drive for your OS/anti virus, should speed things up no end (nice fast drive or ssd).

If you are not into computers then the only "off the shelf" thing I can suggest is "CC Cleaner" ....

I guess the computer guys will shout me down though LOL

Default Cleaning up...

Good call on CCleaner. Pretty safe way to remove lots of rubbish.

Something else that would be worth looking at is removing all softwares you never really use (and then run the registry bit in CCleaner).

You could also take a look at what is starting up everytime you run the computer - over time you tend to find lots of extras creep into the startup.

You could also do a google Black Viper & services. There are usually lots of extra bits of windows that run that aren't really required for most scenarios.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

I've usually found filehippo a pretty clean source of free downloads

Start > Run > type :- "MSCONFIG" , Enter>Tick Selective Startup >click Startup 'tab'> ... remove any ticks in tick boxes next to apps you dont require...(basicly all of them except antivirus in your most comon cases) >click ok

once this is done , run antivirus software , defrag your disk.

job done.
