APC UPS's
Do anyone have APC UPS's? I am connecting to one locally via serial but don't know what commands to type in hyperterminal, as usual important steps are missed out in documentation.

yes once you have the ip address set, you can log in via browser using ip or name. I dont know to use hyperterminal and the command line to use. all it says run HT, log in and away you go. so I have a HT blank window now what....

Does that mean you haven't connected to it yet?
I can't remember the settings, should be in the manual...
Something like:
9600 baud
8 bits
No parity
1 stop bit
no flow control
And pick the correct com port.
Once you are connected with HT, there should be a menu system to navigate and configure it.

Most of the newer APC Controller cards grab a DHCP address when connected to the LAN and then you control everything over the web interface.

yup thats what i mean about the documentation. first it says 9600 then down the line its 2400. so have tried both.
I have an older one and newer one and have tried local connection and entering the dns ip and grabbing dhcp.
I have since been able to get HT to connect so i have the flashing icon but im supposed to be able to type a Y to get a SM reply to show connection but I cant type anything. Am i supposed to open a telnet session after this and type from here?
Also im using a xp laptop to connect, how can i tell if something else is using the com port, where do i check?
Anyways have emailed their support again not to send me their web links of the same stuff i've said i had already done prior to emailing them the first time....

Can't you factory reset it?
If you connected to the correct COM port, just hit enter and it should then display the menu. If the COM port is in use by another application, HT should not let you connect to it, I think..
Which card are you using? Some of the older ones had no web interface and those you can only communicate with via SNMP over ethernet (HT over serial still works)
You are using the correct serial cable? It uses a specially wired one. Normal serial cables will just make the UPS reset power constantly. Done that once

the APC software will usually try and make the connection using all the possible variable re baud rate com ports
be careful older versions had a bug in the Java licencing code contained in the windows service which would hang the server on a reboot

not sure about hanging the server on a reboot but connecting the APC provided com cable causes it to power off....and all the file servers in that rack
