Hi mate there is a free program called Spiceworks that runs on any PC and connects into all PC's and the DC on a network.

Haven't used it too much myself but looks like it could be good for a free program! Links into exchage as well.

A couple of other options depending on the size of your company:
IT Managed Services Software | Kaseya is Automating IT
Altiris Products & Services | Symantec Corp.

I have used trackit before and its a great little package with loads of features. Asset managment, self creation of tickets by end users blah blah blah.
I've not used it in a few years so can't comment on reporting features. I think you can download a 30 day trial.

We use a Cerberus which is far more limited and won't do what you need to.

Reporting is better and tbh if you know your way around sql server then you are laughing the database structure is very simple to write your own detailed reports

Just make sure you make the right structure and "lists" in the first place, makes life a lot easier.

We use Hornbill Supportworks. It's ok, has it's annoyances, but seems to do the job. Before that we used Remedy. None free.

We use Remedy, you can raise helpdesk cases, incidents, requests for change etc, all reports can be printed off for managment. Not sure what the cost is though.

Remedy is very good but only if you have the budget for it because its still an expensive package if its not a large company.

Ive been using servicedesk for about 2 years now and quite happy with it
ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus - Download Service Pack

It has come on a lot since 2000 I think but if you found it a pain back then then you may still have the same opinion of it now

Tbh I like it... it does the job that we require of it
