Changing WinXP serial ...
I have a legit serial for xp pro... but the laptop I have has an illegal serial.. I want to make it legit .. but I dont want to remove all my files ..
I've tried the usual and keep getting an error ..
tried deactivating windows via reg and then putting new one in and it says no.. even forcing it using a program ..

I've always used an old tool called magic jelly bean keyfinder. Always worked for me.
Magical Jelly Bean Software - Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v2.0.1
I think it might depend on the type of key you have though. I'm using a Corporate licensed or VLM key. Maybe other keys like (home) ones don't allow multiple use?

cant you ring microsoft,as you say you have a legit key, they will provide a valid Installation ID over the phone. This will enable you to over write the key.
Most VL keys have been disabled, so you must purchase OEM at the least.
WGA sucks, even for problems like this.

Problem you have, is if the install Cd was for VLK or OEM and you now have a retail serial number, it wont work, as the media is different for Retail, VLK and OEM installs. Unfortunately its a re install unless MS have changed something recently.

1) start > run > "regedit" (without the quotes of course)
2) go to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents\OOBETimer
...and doubleclick on it. Then change some of the value data to ANYTHING ELSE...delete some, add some letters, I don't care...just change it!
now close out regedit.
3) go to start > run > "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" (again, dont type the quotes)
4) the activation screen will come up, click on register over telephone, then click on CHANGE PRODUCT KEY
5) Enter your legit key.
