Default Router question...

when a router is connected to the line, does it receive/transmit when you are not using/connected to it?

It can keep checking the line. Depends what you mean. The lights may flash every now and then... if its wireless someone else might be using it

yeah externally, background traffic and the like but it should be as good as idle. I have noticed my ISP scans the network a fair bit and as Jack says anyone can access (or try to access) whats behind your public IP address

and as Pimmo if the wireless light is flashing and no one in your house is using it....then someone else is

Yes. The router, of course is connected to your ISP all the time it is on.

okay. thanks.

I've bought a 3G router for my Data card, but I have only a 3gig limit per month with vodafone. I don't think i've used more than 1.5gb in a month, but still.

I will defo be setting wep and wpa.

for wireless I have set up for people, I leave it on. I think Vista would rather this setting as well IIRC, something to do with broadcasting the SSID anyways from each wireless point. The only security on wireless worth using is WPA/WPA2 with a long complex password. Mac filtering and SSID disabling doesnt give much security enhancements

a password along the lines of

nF.'MJ[v-1lMuBILY&<b*OtFq?>IE6%IBhXjJnI";621F/;+/I0$48Loik&9f>z
