data recovery
hi guys
quick question
My friend is trying to recover her pics that she lost recently on her pc
Apparently it all went **** up so she decided to format and reinstall xp on the machine
Does that mean there is no hope for recovering these files?
She's trying to use a prog called easy recovery pro afaik
TIA
Niall

You need to stop running the machine from the HDD you are trying to recover files from to start with.
The program you are using is good. There is also GetData back for NTFS (not sure on punctuation of that spelling).
Its unlikely you will get all the files back, its probable that some will have been overwritten too badly by now. It is worth a try though.

Thanks luminous
It does say when she's trying to install it that it should not be run on the partition you are trying to recover files from .
Does that mean she should create a new partition and run it from that ?

Take the drive out of the machine and put it in another computer. Boot the other computer and access that drive as a slave.
An alternative is to pop it into a USB external enclosure and connect it to another machine.
Or, use a spare drive in the current machine. Install windows on the spare drive and use that to access the current one.
Basically you have very little chance of success if you keep using the drive you are wanting to recover information from. It needs to be just accessed for the purposes of data recovery.
One last option is to post it up to me and I can have a look at it next week. I've got a few bits of software to look at it, and an enclosure to drop it into.

As above really. If you don't have another computer, go and buy a hard drive and install windows on there then connect the drive you want to recover data from via USB and run Easy Recovery Pro.
