Recommend my dear old Mum a lap top
Here's the deal. My Mum is in the market to buy a new lap-top. She's currently got an old PC in her spare room, but no longer wants it as it takes up a lot of space.
What I know about computers can be written on the back of a stamp and would still have space to lick it
She only requires it to go online, emails and the occasional letter etc. She took herself off to PC World & Staples, but they are trying to flog her £700 worth of kit, which even with my limited knowledge seems a touch excessive.
Therefore my Scoobynet bretheren, can you help out??
All replies gratefully received

A simple wifi capable dell at under £400 would suit the bill and is completely pre-installed and comes with everything you need right out of the box.

She doesn't fancy a Dell as a 'friend' of hers told her they're unreliable, customer service is not all that and that if they go wrong, nobody can fix them other then Dell themselves*. What do you think??
*Disclaimer, this is not the view of Scoobynet nor any of it's employee's. It is the view of 'Geoff' at the bowls club

LOL well tell all these people to send me their "unfixable" dells I'm sure I can work out a price
If they think a high street store will be better e.g. currys, dixons, pcworld, then I must live in a differing reality to me
The entry level dells are well built, adequately specced for microsoft office style machines and do what they say on the tin.
If they were crap, i'd be the first to say so.

Rubbish!! Dell's are amoung the best quality and most reliable PCs out there, even when their customer service was poorer than ideal (its significantly better now)!! As for unfixable problems an only Dell being able to undertake the work????????????
Dell is probably your best bet for an inexpensive, reliable laptop!

i would say Dell also.
for your standard use computers they are pretty tough to beat. and as said it comes working "out of the box" which sounds ideal to you and your mum.
as for "only dell can fix it" that's like saying only subaru main dealers can fix imprezas, just rubbish.

I'd suggest buying a good seconad habd Apple iBook off ebay for under £200. Unlikely to go wrong, easier to use and less risk of virus attacks, malware etc.
Bought an iMac for my mates mum years ago and within a couple of weeks shes up to speed and now able to do some quite complex stuff and never had a single problem.
