We don't watch an awful lot of TV, but have decided to splash out on a new one. What do you chaps recommend for around £500?

 

Any of the LG/Samsung 40-43" LED 1080p 3D smart TV's can be had for that budget and are feature rich/decent quality.

Its ok, but I wouldn't bother, you're paying a premium for 4K, but there are hardly any sources showing TV in 4K. Only 40" a bit small for me. Also it doesn't even have a freeview box installed. Most of the other ones have freeview HD boxes inside. That's if you need freeview on top of any other services you use of course.

 

Yep ok, but again a 4K TV, i would be only looking at full hd led 1080p tv's.

 

Good advice, cheers. So you wouldn't bother with 4k, then? And is freeview important if we had a sky package? We only tend to watch films and the occasional programme. Would we be better off with freeview and Netflix?

 

Ok, cheers. We don't want too big a telly, we're moving into a barn conversion/cottage and a large telly might look a bit silly.

No you don't need freeview if you have Sky. Its just a nice to have if the Sky box failed for some reason.

 

Not my cup of tea, personal preference on curved tv's. They are supposed to give a wider viewing angle for large spaces, but they don't do it for me.

 

The gadget show did a good feature on TV's last night. They concluded (and the expert) that curved is a waste of money but get a flat screen 4K which should be relatively future proof. 3D isn't important as service providers are dropping their 3D channels so any 3D option with a TV should be looked at as a bonus but not a deciding factor.

Will a 4K tv not have a better picture with a 1080 source than a 1080 tv?

 

No, in fact some are poor as they have to upscale the 1080p content to the tv's 4K resolution. Standard digital content can be really bad as well.

I've recently bought this one. Great little tv. Was surprised how much smaller it is on a whole then my old lg42". Hooked up to my internet and now Netflix is at the push of a button just like any other channel. Got mine from currys cheaper than this, but their site is down so couldn't put a link up to there. Well worth a look in your price range though.

 

4K only really works on TV's bigger than 55" This is what you want if you're after a 40"

2013 European TV of the year and only 20ms of lag input! USB compatibly with most video formats and 4K colour capability if you have a 4K player.

There's also a 46" and 55" version, but getting harder to find

panasonic viera 50" from john lewis,it was only £50 more than argos but has 5 year warranty from john lewis

 

If I went 4K it would have to be 55-60 inch and a Samsung as they are the only input lag free 4k TV's at the moment.

Big price tag for the one I want though. £2500

The bloke in Currys said it was an excellent price (£200 cheaper).

 

It's worth buying from Costco and paying the extra £100 quid over your budget as it comes with a standard 5 year warranty from Costco but their guarantee is no matter how long you have owned the product if you return a faulty product they will refund it.

I'm on my 4th washing machine from Costco and the store near me has been open 11 years? but I'm only £480out of pocket as that's what my last one cost me as each time they break I return them and they give me a full refund.

The one I have now is guaranteed for 10 years and I can bet the price of the washer that if I return it in 10 years time they will refund me in full

 

They always look better in the shop. Effective lighting and funky pin-sharp demo programmes.......

My Dad's a TV Engineer. He's always steered me towards Panasonic or Toshiba sets for all-round reliability/performance/warranty. Phillips and Sony always had better pictures but he says it's a small sacrifice to compromise on that for a "steady Eddie". Truth is you can't really buy a bad TV now. Some are slightly more reliable than others, but with most of the big names sharing Chassis' and other components there isn't much in it. There's a huge amount of choice for £500 now if you ignore the 4K stuff.

I've got a TX-39AS500B at the moment and this was superseded by the 600 series. It been spot on so far but we'll go bigger next time. I underestimated the distance from TV to seating in the sitting room and it looks a bit small tbh.

 

Don't let anyone talk you into getting a used plasma! Some state they are the holy grail, but they buzz like ****, get red hot, are actually crap for gaming and use around 10 billion watts.

 

My Panasonic viera plasma has started buzzing ,3 years old, you wouldn't know with the sound on - but it is

I can guarantee you the picture youre watching is never big enough , but the physical box in the fore and aft will be too large for some rooms , so beware

 

I've never heard of this Viera make.

My Samsung plasma is still going strong, and it's, like, six or perhaps seven years old.

Curved screen TVs do not appeal me, because looking at them feels like a vision distorting exercise.

 

My 55" TV is 48.6 inch wide, my cat is 46.6 inch long.

Your cat in only that long when it has spread itself out on the floor, with its legs sticking out; from paw to paw. Knowing you, you're probably counting the length of its tail as well.
